Ce film de Louis Malle, en partie autobiographique, est sorti en 1987. Le personnage principal est Julien Quentin, 12 ans, qui habite à Paris avec sa famille bourgeoise. Julien est envoyé avec son frère aîné comme pensionnaire au collège catholique de Saint Jean de la Croix, pendant l'hiver 1943 jusqu’en 1944, alors que la France est occupée par l’armée allemande.
