Teaching tips

Cut all twenty-three sheets before sorting; pairs run in sequence three cards on most sheets, so several partners — heel and heal, knot and not, bear and bare — are printed on different sheets
Introduce the silent-letter group together (knot, knight, know, write, wring) comparing kn- and wr- with their partners not, night, no, right and ring
The cards pair words with pictures; use each one with a spoken sentence or a student-written sentence to fix which spelling belongs to which meaning
