This "How Chipmunk Got His Stripes" - A History Play is an adaptation of an Iroquois folk tale. I use this during our Pre-Columbian history unit when focusing on the oral traditions and sacred stories of indigenous people in North America. 

This "How Chipmunk Got His Stripes" - A History Play is a representation of what happens to chipmunks when making fun of other animals. The Iroquois people are one of the nation tribes and are known for their oral traditions to come along with life lessons represented with nature. To give you an idea:

Narrator: Long ago when animals could talk, a bear was walking along. Now it has always been said that bears think very highly of themselves. Since they are big and strong, they are certain that they are the most important of all the animals. As he moved along, Bear turned over logs looking for food to eat.

The "How Chipmunk Got His Stripes" - A History Play includes a total of characters and the narrator. The use of this resource may vary depending on the unit you are doing. Though it could be studied in pairs or small groups. Additionally, your students may present the play to the class.

This play is appropriate for students in high school when studying Native Americans, folklore, or overall indigenous people.
