Reading is a crucial skill for all primary students. Phonics provides the building blocks for these early readers. Sounding out the words students are learning helps them to become independent readers. Students will understand that long and short vowels have different sounds. They will learn that different sounds are spelled differently. They will recognize consonants and how they can be used to create new sounds. For example, two consonants together can make one sound; whereas those same consonants separately will make a different sound.
