About this resource
What's inside this resource
This resource includes CVC words for students to practice reading and develop their phonological awareness. Each dot represents a sound within each word and students are to touch the dot while making each sound, then blend all sounds together, and then read the word.
Example - [bat] - Students will look at each letter, make the sound of each letter, and then blend all the sounds: /b/ /a/ /t/ = bat
The first book presents the CVC words in the following order:
* short a CVC words
* short e CVC words
* short i CVC words
* short o CVC words
* short u CVC words

Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Decode and read aloud 80 short-vowel CVC words (16 words each for short a, e, i, o and u).
Blend individual phonemes to read unfamiliar consonant-vowel-consonant words.
Distinguish between short vowel sounds by working through one dedicated word list per vowel.
Teaching tips
Introduce one vowel page at a time rather than the whole booklet, since each page is a self-contained set for one short vowel sound.
Because each word list is printed twice per page, cut the sheet in half to give two students their own copy, or keep one as a spare.
Use the lists for daily fluency drills, timing how many of the 16 words a student can read correctly in a set time.
Skills covered
CVC decoding — students read simple consonant-vowel-consonant words grouped by short vowel sound.
Phoneme blending — students combine individual letter sounds to read each three-letter word.
Short-vowel discrimination — students practice one vowel sound at a time across five separate word-list pages.
Good to know
Questions teachers ask about this resource
Why does the same word list appear twice on each page?
Each page repeats its 16-word list twice so one printed sheet can be cut in half into two matching copies, useful for pairs of students or a spare copy.
