About this resource
What's inside this resource
If you want to give students extra practice with rounding and place value, I have just the resource for you.
What You Get:
This is a Number Skills Worksheet that is ideal for 3rd and 4th grade students who have mastered place value or need additional review. It is a 1-page printable with 15 problems to solve, but the first one is completed for students. Answer key included.
How To Implement This Resource:
You can print off enough copies of this worksheet for each student to have. You may also choose to print only a few copies and laminate those. If you choose to laminate them, students can use dry erase markers to write answers. This is a great way to turn this into a math center or small group activity.
It can be used during or after a place value lesson as a quick informal assessment to determine how well students have mastered the concept.
There will be a combination of 3-digit, 4-digit, and 5-digit numbers. Students will see the number in figures. The rest of the chart will include:
-- Value of underlined digit
-- Number in words
-- Rounded to the nearest 10
-- Rounded to the nearest 100
-- Rounded to the nearest 1000
This worksheet can be completed independently. You may also choose to have students work together in partners or small groups to complete it.
I hope you enjoy!

Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
State the value of an underlined digit in numbers up to five digits (ones through ten-thousands)
Write 3- to 5-digit numbers in words
Round whole numbers to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000, including cases that round down to zero
Teaching tips
Work the provided example row (1,245) together before releasing students to the remaining fourteen numbers
Laminate a few copies for dry-erase use in a math center, as the sheet is a single reusable chart
Discuss the rows where rounding collapses to zero (403 and 223 to the nearest 1,000) — they expose whether students truly understand the midpoint rule
Use the sheet as a quick informal check after a place-value lesson; one chart covers three skills at once
Note the word forms use the 'and' convention (Five hundred and thirteen) — decide up front whether to accept or adapt it for your local style
Skills covered
Place value — students name the value of the underlined digit, from 3 ones up to 2 ten-thousands.
Number words — every number is written out fully, e.g. Ninety four thousand, three hundred and twenty two.
Rounding — each number is rounded three ways (nearest 10, 100, and 1,000) in one row.
Self-checking — the completed answer sheet mirrors the chart cell for cell.

Questions teachers ask about this resource
What does one row of the chart involve?
Starting from a number in figures with one digit underlined, students give that digit's value (like 300 or 3 hundreds), write the number fully in words, then round it to the nearest 10, the nearest 100, and the nearest 1,000 — five responses per number, with the first row already worked as a model.
Which style do the written number words follow?
The British/Australian 'and' convention — for example Five hundred and thirteen, and Twenty four thousand, nine hundred and fifty one. US classrooms that omit 'and' may want to flag this before students copy the model.
Do any of the numbers create tricky rounding results?
Yes — 403 and 223 round to 0 at the nearest 1,000, and 8001 rounds to 8000 at all three places, so the set deliberately includes results students often second-guess.
