Phonics and Spelling Box Quiz

If you’re looking for an engaging way to ramp up your spelling instruction, this resource will do the trick!

This is a Phonics and Spelling Box Quiz. It was designed for your lower elementary students in kindergarten – 2nd grade. This resource is great because it can be used from week to week with new spelling words.

The first 2 pages consist of the spelling boxes. There are 20 boxes, but the first two have examples in them.

Students will:

--Tap out their spelling word.

--Use the boxes to separate the phonemes (or sounds) or graphemes (vowel pairs, digraphs, etc.) in each of their words.

--Remind students that digraphs like ‘sh’, ‘ch’, or ‘th’ get one box and vowel pairs like “ai” or “ea” also get one box. Silent ‘e’ is written smaller in the same box as the consonant that comes before.

--Not use all the boxes for every word!

The final page will be a Phonics Quiz with space for 10 words.
