Phonics Strategies for 2nd Graders - Part 1 by Phonics Advantage

Phonics Strategies for 2nd Graders is a program that equips students with decoding tools (phonograms, blends, phonics rules, pronunciation rules, word endings and syllable dividing examples) to enable students to become successful, independent readers.

Part 1 of Phonics Strategies for 2nd Graders is a 221-page PDF that focuses on 25 Vc phonograms (chunks) and words ending in -le syllables (ble, ple, dle, tle, etc.)  Part 1 also introduces Silent E's and uses hands-on activities to experience how a short-vowel Vc chunk becomes a long-vowel phonogram when Silent E is added.  There are ten Nonsense Word Challenge Sheets where students practice less common consonant blends and digraphs.  The rule of doubling the consonant of a Vc chunk when adding a word ending beginning with a vowel is emphasized throughout the units through examples and worksheets. 

Students learn how recognizing Vc chunks can help them to divide longer words into syllables.
