Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Identify the meaning of common derivational suffixes such as -able, -ful, -less, and -ment.
Distinguish the two meanings of the suffix -er (an agent noun, as in teacher, versus a comparative, as in smaller).
Recognize American and British spelling variants of the same suffix (-less/-ous) in words such as colorless/colourless and humorous/humourous.
Teaching tips
Print and display the posters as a classroom anchor chart, using the index page as a quick-reference key to the full suffix set.
Introduce the two -er posters together to highlight that the same suffix can mean either "someone who" or "more than" depending on the word.
Skills covered
Suffix meaning recognition — students connect a suffix to its meaning and one example word for 15 common suffixes shown on the posters.
Morphological awareness — students see how the same suffix (-er) or word (colorless/colourless) can carry different meanings or spellings across posters.
