Reading Intervention for Struggling Readers: Book 6

This Reading Intervention for Struggling Readers: Book 6 helps children to use their knowledge of common digraphs to read longer passages and apply their phonic knowledge to new vocabulary. This book is the sixth in a series of books written to provide intervention for struggling readers using decodable reading books, written to build confidence and help the child attain fluency. This book is useful for reading intervention for older pupils, maybe even of 11+ who are struggling to read fluently, but who have a smattering of phonic knowledge but with gaps. It revises CK and OO words adding more commonly used decodable vocabulary giving the child a familiar base on which to build It follows: Book 1 CVC Words Book 2 Consonant Blends Words Book 3 More Consonant Blends Words Book 4 CK word Book 5 OO Words Who is this book for? Older pupils who can read, but who have a reading age well below their chronological age. Such children may struggle to read simple text with accuracy/fluency and thereby lack comprehension. It is not for pupils who are just beginning to read with phonics. Please see my Graded reading books for such pupils. It is convenient enough for parents to use with their children and for use by teachers and private tutors. Outline and steps Having secured a child's blending skills with three and four sounds in books 1 to 3, and practised CK and OO words, we now start to extend the child's ability to decode new words using common digraphs. Assess the whole time as the child reads: if the child stumbles on a word, make a note to revise that phonic sound before continuing to the next book. As these children are not beginners, we now add words ending in /et/ (e.g. packet) and past tense words: rock - rocked. these should be studied before reading this book. I find that often these children need help distinguishing between similar words, such as back and black, and by retraining the child to read accurately using these simple texts - that do not look babyish - and then rebuilding from the bottom up, much progress can be made. I thought that my pupils would look with disdain at these books. I found the opposite; they were so relieved that at last somebody had actually given them a book they could read! Simply print on A4 paper, two on a page. Cut into individual A5 pages, and staple or bind them together to make a book. Purpose These books have been written and tried and tested on some of my older pupils (mainly boys I admit), and they have proved very helpful. Most of my pupils have a dyslexic type problem, involving poor processing skills and have had years of failure. They must build a secure foundation for reading ability to build upon. These books, used as described, will help to build that foundation. I am finding an increasing number of such pupils desperate for help. You can help, too! It is not hard; you just need to understand the problem a little. What is included? 1 pdf with 16 pages, 4 reading passages and 4 fluency charts.

Sentences and short paragraphsare also included for students to correct. It is tried and true and I have used it with much success in my first grade classroom. Here's What is Included: ★15 Posters for the 5 primary rules for writing listed above. ★Hands with “Give me Five” which includes the 5 primary rules for writing: Do you have capitals, Do you spaces between words, Do you have end marks, Did you use your best spelling and Does it make sense? ★Posters to explain and teach each rule with examples to correct or decide which is the best way to write. There are 15 posters for your use or display, which are created in color and black and white. They can be posted in a writing station/center or can be used as a teaching tool if copied onto the smart board or used in PDF format on your smart board as well. ★A Black and White cover if you decide to make a booklet for each student to use as you teach the concepts or just to have all of the pages in one place. ★26 pages with 5 sentences on each page for students to rewrite and correct. They can be completed as one sentence a day and corrected together or however you choose to use them. ★7 pages of short paragraphs to correct and place end marks as needed to separate the sentences. All pages can be printed onto the smart board to be completed as a class...your choice! ★All pages are duplicated with the corrections as an answer sheet if needed. How I have used these pages with my first and second graders: ★ Laminated and gave each student a hand to clip into their writing journals as a reminder of what he/she needs to remember when writing and for use whenever students are writing. I also placed some of these in areas where students write and in table baskets. ★I copied all posters onto the smart board and used each one separately each week to discuss and teach a particular concept. I told my kiddos that I was looking for that concept in their writing that week. So, if I taught the first poster , which is using capitals at the beginning of sentences, then I was expecting them to remember that and use capitals at the beginning of sentences. I taught and discussed each poster in this manner. Sometimes, for example; I taught more than one concept a week. Perhaps 2-3 a week when using all the times we need to use capitals as there are many posters explaining capitalization. ★I taught capitalization and end marks, I then introduced the Edit pages and at first we did one sentence a day together only focusing on capitalization and end marks. After I felt the students could manage this on their own, they did one sentence, which took a minute or two independently during a quick “Daily Edit” time and we went over it together. Children explained why the correction needed to be made and everyone used a crayon...not pencil...to make their corrections to self reflect on their errors. We then took a few minutes to have a share out...What did you learn...why was that important...how did you know to do that etc. ★ When they seemed fairly competent with this skill, then we moved onto the next poster and continued in this manner doing a few samples together until we completed all the posters. ★When all skills were taught, then we did the daily edit everyday as described above in #3. ★By this time, students were expected to understand what and how to use the conventions. Of course not everyone was proficient!!! The paragraph pages can also be used in cooperative groups or with partners. What was clear after using the “Give Me 5” ideas, was that the students had a tool on which to rely and to use during independent writing. This easy to follow resource which teaches beginning writing in a fun and interactive way is great for early writers!
