"The Graveyard Book" Task Cards: Match Quote to Theme
About This Product
This is a set of Task Cards for The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman.
How to Use the Task Cards:
DIRECTIONS:
With a partner, in a small group, or individually, students will read, analyze, and categorize the quotes on the following task cards. Students will explain how each quote relates to the theme they categorized it under. When working with a partner or in a small group, students can take turns reading the task cards and discussing one or more of the following:
• What is the meaning of the quote?
• How does it contribute to the plot?
• Does it reveal anything about a character?
• What is the quotes relation to the theme?
VARIATIONS:
• # 1 - Post the theme titles around the classroom. Give each student 1 quote task card. After reading all the theme categories, they will decide which theme their quote card best fits with. They will walk over to the place in the classroom where the theme title card has been posted. Once all the students find a group, they will discuss why they think their quote card best fits with the theme. Each group will select 1-2 group members to share out, to the whole class, any of the following: the quote that fits the best with the theme, the quote they are unsure of, the favorite quote of the group, etc.).
• # 2 - Divide the class into groups of 3-4 students. Choose 1-2 different themes for each group to focus on. Supply each group with all the task cards. Have them sort through their deck of quote task cards and determine which cards go with either of their 2 assigned themes.
• # 3 - Make up your own way to use the cards. Or better yet, let the students make up a fun way use these task cards.
