About this resource

What's inside this resource

Have your students just started learning about using doubles to subtract? Have they mastered the skill? Do you have students in your classroom who could use additional practice to sharpen their subtraction skills?

This is a Using Doubles to Subtract Printable Pack for your lower elementary students. If your students are fluent with their doubles facts, this is a subtraction strategy for you! One strategy of many, of course, but one more tool your students can use to master their basic addition and subtraction facts.

There are 3 pages included. The first page will provide a detailed visual for solving subtraction problems with this strategy. At the bottom of the page, students will be given practice problems.

On the second page, students will have 30 doubles additions facts to solve. On the third page, students will use what they know about adding doubles to help you subtract. There are 20 subtraction problems on the final page.

These pages can be completed as a whole group, small group, or in centers.

I hope you enjoy!

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Recall doubles addition facts from 1+1 through 10+10 fluently.

  • Use a known doubles addition fact to solve a related subtraction fact (e.g., knowing 8+8=16 to solve 16-8).

  • Apply the doubles-to-subtract strategy independently across twenty subtraction problems.

Teaching tips

  • Confirm students have their doubles addition facts memorized before introducing this pack, since the strategy explicitly depends on that prior fluency, as the teacher note states.

  • Walk through the candy-bowl visual example as a group before assigning the six 'you try' items, since it models the exact reasoning students are expected to apply.

  • Use the thirty-item doubles-addition drill as a quick fluency check before moving to the subtraction practice page, to confirm the underlying facts are solid first.

Skills covered

  • Doubles addition fact fluency — students recall sums from 1+1 through 10+10 across a thirty-item drill.

  • Doubles-based subtraction strategy — students use a known doubles fact to solve a related subtraction problem, such as 8+8=16 leading to 16-8=8.

  • Independent strategy application — twenty final practice problems require students to apply the strategy without a worked example alongside each item.

Good to know

Questions teachers ask about this resource

Does the pack expect students to already know their doubles facts, or does it teach them from scratch?

It assumes doubles facts are already fluent: the introduction is addressed to teachers whose students are 'fluent with their doubles facts,' and the pack's purpose is applying that existing fluency to subtraction rather than teaching the doubles facts themselves.
