Year-Long Set of High Frequency Words | Spelling List Program

This resource is a year-long spelling program for high-frequency words for Kindergarten - 4th Grade.

This program gives parents the tools they need to help their students become better readers!  Each student develops his or her reading and writing skills by acquiring more high frequency words that he or she knows instantly.  Then, at the end of each grade level, the student goes back and practices the list again, this time as spelling words.

After a student gets through a grade level, he or she is allowed to go on to the next level. I don’t limit students because of the grade level of the list, but I do ask students (and parents) to use the grade level written at the top of each list as a guideline.  If we have to, we go back and start with the list the student needs to master.

In addition to practicing their lists at home, students are paired together to practice their lists for 5-10 minutes in the morning as I take roll or finish other business. In addition, I may ask them to practice on those occasions where we have a few minutes to fill.  As children pass a list, we celebrate and they are given a “raffle” ticket.  I record students’ progress on a chart that hangs in the room. 

When a student passes a list, I write the number for the month instead of putting a sticker on the chart.  (ie if a student passes list 1 in September, I would put a “9”.)  This enables me to look back at the end of the month and quickly see who has not passed a list during that month.  Then, I attach the note at the end of this document to the student’s list and send it home again.
