Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
- Identify common community-helper jobs and the tools or settings associated with each
- Retell or role-play a community helper's job using the finished puppet
- Read and use a simple map key to build a community layout
Teaching tips
- Have students colour and cut out the black-and-white set themselves as a fine-motor and following-directions activity, and keep the colour set as a teacher-made backup or fast-finisher option
- Glue each puppet to a popsicle stick and use them for retelling during a read-aloud about community helpers, as the cover suggests
- Pair the map worksheet with a walk around the school neighbourhood so students can place real signs (stop sign, crosswalk) onto their own map
Skills covered
- Social studies

Questions teachers ask about this resource
Are the puppets black-and-white only, or is there a colour version too?
Both are included — black-and-white line art for students to colour, and separate ready-to-use colour versions of the same 12 characters.
Is the community map a separate activity from the puppets, or does it connect to them?
It's a separate bonus page — a blank map with a key and printable street-sign icons (stop sign, crosswalk, speed limit) for students to build their own mini community layout alongside puppet play.
