Transformations Review and Test
Support your students’ learning with this Transformations Review and Test. This resource was specifically designed to assess student understanding. This review and test were crafted for your Grade 5 Geometry students.
How to Use This Resource
Once you have completed instruction for your Transformations unit, you can print the review pages and allow students to complete them. The review is a 3-page printable with 8 questions. Students will rotate figures, describe reflections, and more. The review is something that can be completely independently, with a partner, or as a whole group.
When the review is completed, students will be ready for the test! The test is a 3-page printable with 5 questions.
This Transformations Review and Test will leave you feeling more prepared and will leave your students feeling more knowledgeable about this topic!

Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Translate, rotate about a given point, and reflect a figure over a given line, drawing the resulting image on a coordinate grid.
Plot ordered pairs on a Cartesian plane and record the coordinates of a point after a sequence of transformations.
Describe a transformation in writing using required vocabulary — the transformation type plus distance/units and direction, point of rotation, or line of reflection.
Identify the sequence of transformations that moves a figure from one labeled position to another across a multi-step diagram.
Teaching tips
Assign the review before the test so students practice the transformation-vocabulary checklist (translate/rotate/reflect plus the required descriptive elements) before the graded assessment.
Award the review's built-in bonus mark to students who use a ruler when drawing their transformations, as stated on the review page itself.
Use the answer key's grading breakdown — 3 marks per transformation: location, label, and congruence — to score written descriptions consistently.
Offer review question 8 (finding every possible transformation sequence from position A to B) as an extension for early finishers, per the answer key's own note.
Skills covered
Coordinate-plane translation — students move figures a stated number of units in stated directions, e.g. "Translate 3 units down, then 5 units right."
Rotation about a point — students rotate figures a specified angle or turn (e.g. 90° CCW about Point J) and record the resulting coordinates of a labeled vertex.
Reflection over a line — students reflect figures over a named line or segment and draw the mirrored image.
Transformation vocabulary — students write descriptions that include the required elements (distance/units/direction for translations, point/direction for rotations, figure/line for reflections).
Multi-step transformation sequencing — students trace a shape through translate-rotate-reflect chains from position A through D and name each step.

Questions teachers ask about this resource
How does the Review packet differ from the Test?
The Review has 8 practice questions with vocabulary checklists showing exactly what a correct transformation description must include; the 5-question Test applies the same skills without those checklists.
Is there a bonus opportunity built into the Review?
Yes — the Review awards one overall bonus mark to any student who uses a ruler while drawing their transformations.
