About this resource

Letter D Cut and Paste Worksheets provides three sorts for Nursery (Early Years) and Year 1 phonics practice. Students sort pictures beginning with /d/, separate uppercase D from lowercase d, and distinguish D/d from other letters.

The five-page PDF includes the three activity sheets, terms and credits. All picture and letter pieces are supplied; print the sheets and provide scissors and glue. Say picture names together before learners cut and sort.

Use the activities in literacy centres, small groups or supported independent practice.

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Identify pictures whose names begin with the /d/ sound.

  • Sort uppercase D and lowercase d correctly by case.

  • Distinguish the letter D from visually similar letters such as g, Q and k.

Teaching tips

  • Have students say each picture's name aloud before gluing it under the dolphin, since the sort is built around the initial /d/ sound rather than spelling.

  • Introduce the third worksheet's discrimination task (D vs. g, Q, k) after students are comfortable with the capital/lowercase sort, since it adds visually similar distractor letters.

  • Have scissors and glue ready before starting, since all three worksheets are cut-and-paste sorting tasks rather than write-in practice.

Skills covered

  • Phonemic awareness — students identify pictures whose names begin with the /d/ sound and paste them under a dolphin.

  • Letter-case recognition — students sort capital D and lowercase d under separate headers.

  • Visual letter discrimination — students sort D out from similar-looking letters (g, Q, k) using an 'I am / I am not' sorting frame.

  • Fine motor practice — all three worksheets require cutting out and pasting pieces into place rather than writing.
