About this resource
This is a Vocabulary Journal that your students can use at any time across any subject. This is a 1-page printable that has space for 2 vocabulary words. This means you can print as many copies as you could possibly need. You can leave them as a full sheet if you want to utilize the cover page.
At the top of the journal entry, students will complete the sentence frame “Write the meaning of ___________ in your own words.” Then students will use the lines below to write a definition. In the empty space below that, students will draw a picture of an example of the word they just wrote about.
There is no limit to how this vocabulary journal can be applied. You may choose to use it at the start of a new science unit when students are being introduced to new science vocabulary. You may choose to use it for weekly spelling lists as it gives another way for students to practice their spelling words.
I hope you enjoy!

Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Define a given vocabulary word in their own words.
Teaching tips
Duplicate the definition slide once per vocabulary word so students build a running journal across the term.
Reuse the same template across subjects, since the blank is not tied to any one subject area.
Have students personalize the cover slide before printing their individual journal.
Skills covered
Vocabulary definition in own words — students write a personal definition for a given word rather than copying a dictionary entry.
