About this resource

My students have always understood sequences of transformations by simple test practice and I hope yours will feel more confident after practicing several types of sequences of transformation problems!

This resource was developed provide students with extra practice when meeting the requirements of the 8th Grade Geometry Standards below:

Understand that a two-dimensional figure is congruent to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, and translations; given two congruent figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the congruence between them.

Understand that a two-dimensional figure is similar to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, translations, and dilations; given two similar two-dimensional figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the similarity between them

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Students will identify which sequence of rotations, reflections and translations proves two figures congruent.

  • Students will identify which sequence of rotations, reflections, translations and dilations proves two figures similar.

  • Students will calculate a resulting angle measure, side length or radius after applying a stated sequence of transformations.

Teaching tips

  • Because the task-card and worksheet versions share the same sixteen questions and answer key, use the task cards for a rotation or scavenger-hunt review and the worksheet for independent or timed practice, without writing new questions for either format.

  • Questions 1-11 focus on identifying a transformation sequence, while questions 12-16 shift to computing a resulting measurement, so the set can be split into two shorter practice sessions if a full 16-question sitting is too long.

  • Since every question is standardized-test style with four answer choices, this set doubles as multiple-choice test prep alongside a straightforward comprehension check on transformations.

Skills covered

  • Congruence via transformation sequences — students identify the sequence of rotations, reflections and translations that proves two figures congruent (questions 1-6, 10-11).

  • Similarity via transformation sequences — students identify the sequence, including a dilation, that proves two figures similar (questions 7, 9, 16).

  • Measurement after transformation — students calculate a resulting angle measure, segment length, or radius after a stated sequence of transformations (questions 12-15).

Questions teachers ask about this resource

What's the difference between the task-card version and the worksheet version?

They contain the identical sixteen questions and worked solutions; the task-card version splits them two-per-page with a separate student answer sheet, while the worksheet version prints them in a continuous standardized-test layout.

What do the last few questions ask students to do differently?

Starting around question 12, instead of choosing a transformation sequence from four options, students calculate a resulting angle measure, side length or radius after a given sequence is applied.
