Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Students can produce a personal drawing-and-definition reference for a teacher-assigned vocabulary word.

  • Students can write a definition in their own words or from a source alongside a visual memory aid.

Teaching tips

  • Provide the word list separately (from a textbook chapter or unit), since the template itself does not include any vocabulary words beyond the one worked example.

  • Use the table-format page for shorter definitions and the list-format page when students need more writing space or a larger drawing area.

  • Share the worked 'Privateer' example first so students understand how much detail belongs in the drawing versus the definition.

  • Distribute the editable Word file if word banks, instructions, or the number of blank rows need to be adjusted for a specific class.

Skills covered

  • Vocabulary recall through visual mnemonics — students create their own image to represent each assigned word's meaning.

  • Definition writing — students record a word's definition in the space provided, either copied from a source or paraphrased.

  • Reference-material creation — students build a personal study page pairing an image with an assigned word's meaning.
