The accompanying activities enable students to engage in more in-depth class and peer conversations. Students will reply to open-ended questions with short responses, and the questions require students to present text evidence to support their thinking. The questions also challenge them to provide their opinions and/or perspectives. ⭐️This resource includes:⭐️ 4 Theme-Focused Activities: For each of the four themes, this product includes a handout with a brief description of the theme, how the theme connects to the novel, and questions related to the theme. This theme study focuses on the following four themes: ◾ Family ◾ Survival ◾ Hope ◾ Inequality & Injustices This theme study can be implemented in a variety of ways. Students, for example, can work in groups, with each group assigned a different theme to analyze. Alternatively, the teacher can assign different themes to students to analyze independently. Then, have students form groups with others who are working on the same theme (imagine a jigsaw collaboration).
