This beginning sound sort is a great hands on activity for recognizing the most common sound of each letter of the alphabet. This is an easy and fun activity to give students who need practice with recognizing the beginning sound of each letter from amongst other letter sounds or for those students who need extra practice distinguishing between the initial sounds in words. To complete this sorting activity , students will look at the pictures inside the gold coins and place the coin into the correct pot according to that picture's beginning sound. This sorting activity includes 12 pages that contains There are twenty-six pot mats that each have one letter of the alphabet on the pot, in both its capital form and its lowercase form. There are 52 gold coin pieces for students to match with the correct pot. There are also pictures for X in the initial position and X in the final position depending on which sound is taught. This beginning sound sort can be used in the following ways Literacy centers Fine motor centers File folder activity Add magnets to the picture cards for a baking tray activity Small group activities Morning work Emergency sub plans If making a file folder game, the teacher will place one or two mats on either side of the folder and use hook and loop fasteners to sort the gold coin pictures. What is Included: Addition Task Cards for sums up to 20 Number Bond Addition Mat Number Sentence Addition Mat Tens Frames Addition Mat Addition Mat with Tens and Ones Number Line Addition Mat up to 10 Number Line Addition Mat up to 20 Optional recording sheet How to Use: To use this St. Patrick's Day addition math station, the teacher will choose an addition mat for students to use while solving each addition problem. How to Use: Students will choose one of the patterning cards available. They will then use the cards to copy the pattern on the card and then they will continue the pattern out until all the pieces are used. Students may also use the cards to create their own unique patterns. They will love playing and going head to head with one another, while barely noticing how much decimal multiplication practice they are actually doing. This game even incorporates some basic financial literacy, since students are working with dollar amounts! Students either multiply an amount of money by a one-digit or two-digit whole number. You choose which level works best for your class. How to Play: 1) Decide if you will multiply an amount of money by a one-digit or two-digit number. 2) Give each player a game board with six rounds. 3) The teacher/leader rolls the die for the first time (Note: a 10-sided die will make the game more exciting). 4) Every student must choose where to place that number before the leader rolls again. No moving numbers! 5) The leader rolls 4 or 5 times, depending on the game chosen. Students place each number after each roll. 6) Students calculate their jackpots. The highest one wins! 7) Discuss strategies for number placement. Once you have played as a whole class, this could become a math center for small groups! SOCIAL STUDIES You could also use this project for social skills centers and as a basis for teaching about the changes in the world historically in regard to how people communicate much less commonly through "snail mail." MATH ACTIVITY IDEAS Also, you can integrate math activities. For example, the cost of a postage stamp and how much it would cost to send out 10 cards to friends/families (how many stamps you need to purchase multiplied by the number of stamps you need to buy).
