Life of St. Valentine - Reading, Writing, Research Activities Pack

My "Life of Saint Valentine" activity pack is designed to make it easy to teach students of all ages about the life of St. Valentine. My specific recommended age range is pre-k through 5th grade, though special education students of all ages will benefit as well. Of course, many older children enjoy coloring, so the coloring sheets can be used as a way to make the day more interesting, as a reward, or as a way to occupy busy minds after completing required assignments. Pre-readers will be able to participate by coloring the pages and can be guided by the teacher who can read the sentences and ask the questions verbally while the pre-reader is coloring the images on each page. Students who are reading and writing, or learning to read and write, will get further practice in developing their reading and writing skills. Students who are able will also be required to research the life of Saint Valentine. Students will learn about multiple historical Valentine persons, including one female. Students will not only develop research skills, but critical thinking skills as well, because many of the questions require them to think outside the box. Included in this activities pack: Challenging Crossword Puzzle with answer key included Not too easy Word Search with answer key included. 10 Coloring Pages, each with a question that can be answered verbally or in writing. Space is given for writing, or a separate sheet of paper may be used, depending on teacher preference. A Word Scramble Worksheet - Word Bank is included to help simplify if needed. Teacher could remove the word bank if they want to make it more challenging. Answer key is included. 5 Short Answer writing prompts as well as one 1-2 paragraph writing assignment. Students are asked to choose one of the Valentines to do further research. Reference/Resources page to help with research. While students are working on these activities, they will be increasing vocabulary because many of the words may be unfamiliar to them. Each page is bordered with a beautiful Valentines Day theme. Valentine’s Day is full of romantic thoughts and ideas. It is also rich in reds, pinks, and bright whites, which helps to brighten up the dull winter season, before spring brings new life. This Valentines Day Social Skills Activities Worksheet was created to celebrate the season as well as give teachers and homeschoolers something unique to do to practice social emotional learning, facial recognition, and fine motor skills. This is a short one-page activity that doesn’t require any writing, though reading is involved if it is completed independently. Teachers and parents can also read the words aloud to students who aren’t reading yet. Of course, read aloud activities are always good for developing listening skills as well. Adorable clip art from one of my favorite clip artists was used to make reading the facial expressions more enjoyable. Total number of cards: 8 different designs (all with cream backgrounds) Black and Grey Cat with Pink and Red Mug - Saying: "Happy Valentine's Day to a Cool Cat" Black and Grey Cat with Red Bow in Hair with Mug - Saying: "Happy Valentine's Day to a Kool Kitten? Boy and Girl holding balloons and candy - Saying "Lots of Love for Valentine's Day XOXO Framed Design in pink and dark red/burgundy - Saying "Lots of Love for Valentine's Day" Framed Red Heart with Pink Bow - Saying "With Love on Valentine's Day" Pink and Purple Card - Saying "Happy Valentine's Day LOVE - Know that I love you to the moon and back." Card with Candy Hearts - Purple, Blue/Green, Red - Saying "I Love You" - Heart sayings include "Be Mine," "True Love," "Charm Me," "Kiss Me." Card with pink and purple hearts - Saying "Today is a celebration of all love - Happy Valentine's Day." You can have students work on them for a special project. Print the cards with the envelope template for each card (print 8 copies of the envelope template), have students choose their favorite, cut the card and the envelope template, fold them, and personalize them to give to a friend or loved one. Students will Practice hands-on craft skills (cutting, folding, pasting, problem solving with the challenge of properly creating an envelope from the template). Practice handwriting and spelling, proper grammar (including use of capitalization for proper nouns, at the beginning of sentence, proper use of commas and periods). Practice proper addressing of an envelope in preparation of sending in the mail, which is an important life skill. Greeting cards are not age specific. If the student can't read or write, they can draw pictures inside their card and get help from peers and teachers.

I love to make printable greeting cards and bookmarks. Not only are they fun for kids to do but can be used to practice and build useful and important skills. For example, these cute Valentines Day cards with matching envelope template (5 x 7 finished size): Require students to cut out the cards and envelope template in order to create a finished card with a matching envelope. Cutting with scissors builds fine motor skills. When students fold the cards correctly as well as paste the envelope template correctly, they are developing (especially with the envelope template) problem solving skills in addition to the fine motor skills practice. Deciding who to give the card, writing out a greeting to the chosen person, and addressing the envelope will not only build social skills, but life skills that will always be needed throughout adulthood. Properly addressing the card and outside envelope will require proper capitalization and grammar and will develop handwriting skills as well. Students can work on their cards as a group. Teachers can create a special center for this project. Cards are blank on the inside so that students can decide what they want to say. They can also draw pictures if they are not reading or writing letters yet. The cards are not age specific. They can be created with pre-readers all the way up to adulthood. There are six (6) different foldable, 5 x 7-inch cards with the following sayings: All you need is Jesus Jesus loves you Be my valentine I love you Two of the cards contain a picture without a saying. One envelope template is included, which can be used with any 5 x 7 card besides the cards in the Valentines Day card pack. pdf downloadable file, each card is on a separate sheet of paper. And while it's now known for kissing, Valentine's Day gifts, and hard-to-get dinner reservations, the origins of the holiday are far less romantic. Many people believe he’s celebrated for his role as a Roman priest who helped couples secretly get married. Valentine’s Day did not come to be celebrated as a day of romance until about the 14th century. Today, we celebrate it on the 14th of February. This 90-minute lesson will teach young children the real history behind the globally celebrated Valentine's Day. It is based on the YouTube video 'Bet You Didn't Know: Valentine's Day | History' by the acclaimed History channel. There are plenty of activities and their answers are provided at the end.
