How to say the Initial Sounds
ELA, Language Development, Pre-Reading, Phonics, Preschool, Teacher Tools, Presentations

This is a video that teaches how to correctly pronounce the 26 initial (or beginning) sounds of the alphabet. Where necessary tips are given as to the production of the sounds. Comparisons are made with like letters: p/b, f/v, p/b Who can use this video? Any who need to learn how to pronounce the initial/beginning sounds. Teachers, parents, classroom assistants It can be used fo staff training, It can be made available to parents to help them with their children's school work, private tutors who wish to help a parent understand their work and anyone else who needs it! Why is this initial Sound video necessary? The correct pronunciation of the beginning/initial sounds is essential as it is upon these that a child must learn to both segment words to spell and blend to read. It is often when reading that a child who has not learned to say the initial sound correctly finds it harder to learn to blend. Many parents and teachers, often unknowingly, add an extra schwa sound to the pure phonic sound. Instead of 'p', they say 'puh' or huh or juh. This means that when the child comes to sound out the word, s/he says puh-a-tuh and understandably cannot hear the words /pat/. This video can help to ensure that children learn correctly, right from the start.

Social Studies, Economics, Grade 3, 4, 5, Activities, Teacher Tools

The Monsters, Inc. movie guide combines writing and economic terms so students can find examples of economic terms in the movie and provide evidence of how these concepts are used. Using movies or movie guides in the classroom can make learning more interactive and relatable for your class. Movies bring lessons to life by showing social studies concepts and social issues in an entertaining way. Movie guides help students focus on important details throughout at the movie and think critically about what they watch. Movie Synopsis: Monsters Incorporated is the largest scare factory in the monster world, and James P. Sullivan (Sully) is one of its top scarers. Sully is a huge, "intimidating" monster with who aims to keep his spot on the leaderboard, but not at the expense of those he loves. His scare assistant, best friend and roommate is Mike Wazowski, a green, opinionated, feisty little one-eyed monster. Someone from the human world, Boo, is a tiny girl who sneaks into Monstropolis during an energy crisis. Sully and Mike work to keep Boo safe, as well as save Monstropolis from running out of energy. Speaking and listening standards can also be covered depending on how many of the above topics you cover in your classroom. The movie guide provides an opportunity for teachers to "get back" some of that class time at the end of a unit, whether needed for grading projects, working one on one with students, or finishing up assessments. Other students are engaged and still actively searching for the topics covered in the unit discussed.
