Cells Reading Comprehension Passage - Cored Ed Encyclopedia

Cells Reading Comprehension Passage - Cored Ed Encyclopedia
ELA, Language Development, Reading Comprehension, Reading, Pre-Reading, Life Sciences, Science, Technology, History, Social Studies, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Teacher Tools, Centers, Activities, Writing Prompts, Assessments, Quizzes and Tests, Quizzes, Lesson Plans

This cells reading comprehension with lesson plan includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Quick pause—thousands of Cored Education products are included with your TeachSimple membership. Download links and encyclopedia index available here. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. Do some, do none, do all, completely optional - but you will feel reassured knowing every possibility is planned for. Includes summary writting question and additional facts. Answer Key There are answers for the multiple-choice questions, written response questions have sample answers, vocabulary answers and if there is a summary question then a sample summary will be provided as well. Lesson Plan Included Customized lesson plan for this lesson is included. Lesson Snapshot Title: Cells Genre: Nonfiction (informational science text with headings) Subject: Life Science / Reading (Informational Text) Primary Topic: Cell discovery, parts, and how cells work Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): Q What This Lesson Teaches Best Explains how scientists first described “cells” by observing cork under a microscope (Robert Hooke, 1665). Shows how improved lenses led to new discoveries, including seeing living tiny organisms and developing the idea that living things are built from cells. Teaches core cell-part functions using a clear analogy (a cell as a “busy little city”), including membrane, nucleus/DNA, and organelles. Highlights differences and similarities across living things (one-celled organisms vs. animals with trillions of cells working in teams). Introduces the idea of cell division and specialization as a way living things grow and heal. Learning Goals Students will explain why Robert Hooke used the word “cells” for what he saw in cork. Students will describe how better microscopes changed what scientists could observe. Students will identify key cell parts named in the text and describe what each does. Students will compare one-celled organisms with animals made of many cells, using details from the passage. Students will describe what the passage says about how new cells form. Key Vocabulary From the Text membrane — thin “skin” that separates inside from outside. nucleus — cell center part that holds DNA. organelles — tiny cell parts with special jobs. mitochondria — parts that help release energy from food. chloroplasts — green parts that capture sunlight. Health Coloring Pages: Strawberry Counting & Tracing (0–12)

Health Coloring Pages: Strawberry Counting & Tracing (0–12)
Health, P.E. & Health, Early Math, Math, Counting, Numbers, Kindergarten, Preschool, Grade 1, Coloring Pages, Worksheets, Worksheets & Printables

Healthy Eating Fun: Strawberry Seed Counting & Writing (0–12) I made this strawberry-themed activity pack to combine early math practice with a simple healthy foods theme. Coloring is included because so many kids like to color! And it’s a fun way to sneak in number sense and fine-motor skills. This pack really requires no prep (just print and go), and it will work well for preschool, kindergarten, or early first grade learners who need repeated practice with counting, number recognition, and tracing. Students count the seeds, circle the correct number from the choices provided. Each page also includes tracing practice for the words “strawberry seeds,” plus a reminder to read the words out loud. I love these graphics! They're so bright and colorful! As a dietitian, I love making products that encourage healthy eating while being fun at the same time. There’s also a simple direction to color in the numbers, which makes this a great fit for teachers who are looking for health/food coloring pages that still have a real academic purpose. My activity pack includes counting pages that cover 0 through 12, so you can choose the number range that fits your students (0–5 for beginners, 0–10 for most learners or extend to 12 for a challenge). These activities can be used in a math center, for independent work, morning tubs, early finisher folders, small group practice, or send-home review. I've also included is a cut-and-order activity that teachers so that students get to practice their scissors skills as well. The activity is simple, students simply cut out the strawberries, color the numbers, if they like, and then arrange them in the correct order as well as match the number to the strawberry with the correct number of seeds. This adds sequencing and number sense practice and will your students a fine motor option. I added a bonus, “What Makes Strawberries So Healthy?” page with short statements and writing lines, which is perfect for teaching a little nutrition and encourage students to eat more fruit--especially strawberries! This product includes: • Strawberry seed counting + writing pages (0–12) • Tracing “strawberry seeds” and reading the words out loud • Cut-and-order number sequencing activity • Bonus healthy eating page about strawberries File Type: PDF (print-and-go)

Use these as a way to calm down students at the end of a lively lesson or to use them as a brain break. In my practice as a full-time school counselor for grades kindergarten through 8th grade, I can honestly say I have used these with kindergarten through 8th grade. These are even appropriate for high schoolers. I have used them for small groups, after a guidance lesson, in a social emotional discussion with a large group of students to help them stay centered on the topic and one on one with students. These could also be used when students finish their work, during quiet time, used in a calm down corner or reset corner in the classroom or as extra activities for the classroom.
