Holiday Flavors: An ESL Lesson about Holiday Cheer and Seasonal Foods

Are you crazy for pumpkin spice? Is Thanksgiving incomplete without a turkey and stuffing? Does Christmas only feel real after the first sip of eggnog? In this ESL lesson your students will discuss holiday cheer, and how seasonal foods play a part in getting in the mood for the holidays. Students will be given the opportunity to discuss their guilty pleasures as to holiday foods and explain what exactly makes them enjoy the holidays. Does the weather outside need to be frightful and the fire inside delightful? Does Mariah Carey need to be belting from the stereo? Does Home Alone need to be playing on repeat to start the season? Does a trip to a heavily-decorated mall let you know that Santa is coming? Take the opportunity to celebrate the holidays with your students by talking about their holiday traditions. *****Our lessons focus on practical day to day language, while providing an array of vocabulary words that teach students how to speak with a native flair. The design of each lesson plan is to encourage open conversation with students. Our lessons typically follow the same format. Each topic or lesson plan will begin with a series of warm-up questions, followed by an initial introduction of ten vocabulary words, and a fill in the blank in exercise. The second half of the lesson will include an additional series of questions, five more vocabulary words and a post lesson writing assignment. All of this is designed to make the lesson extremely interactive and encourage students to converse freely, while providing vocabulary focused tasks and an engaging topic. Each lesson will have an article or video referenced that will introduce the main theme or topic of the lesson. Please be advised that some of these articles have a paywall or limited monthly access. SN Blend Find and Colour Phonics Worksheet to Develop Phonemic

This SN fun, Find and Color worksheet for initial blends is excellent for acquainting children orally with initial consonant blends and helping them develop the necessary phonemic awareness in preparation for more advanced blending work, involving four phonemes. What is included in the pack? One PDF sheet for the SN blend. What do the worksheets involve? Pupils are instructed to combine the two letters on each worksheet and then look for objects that start with that consonant blend. Then, these items ought to be coloured, leaving the others uncoloured. Children can easily work on the sheets unaided once they have been instructed, although, with those children with special needs, it is strongly suggested that an adult works with the child for maximum benefit. How to use The introduction of the concept of initial blends needs to be done thoroughly. When I work with children, especially those with a special need, I first like to teach children to blend two consonant letters. Then I work on developing the children's phonemic awareness: that being the ability to hear two consonant letters blended at the beginning of a word, easily. This is difficult for some pupils and takes a lot of practice. These worksheets can assist by first encouraging students to blend the two consonant letters and then by helping them to hear the blend at the start of a word. As often as you can, practice blending the letters in each initial blend and encourage the students to follow suit. I find that modelling is key at this stage. Who are the initial blends Find and colour worksheets for? Young learners Those with a special need Due to their non-babyish nature, they can be successfully used with older ESL/EFL pupils. Answer keys: The answer key is included on the sheet, in small print.

This is a bingo game that practices all the grade 2 high-frequency sight words. Along with that, this resource features a bunch of flash cards that you can use to introduce and practice these words. You can choose to print them with sharp edges or curved ones, though I prefer the curved ones. Otherwise students might hurt themselves on the edges, which is something we'd like to prevent altogether. Now with this resource come a bunch of Bingo sheets. So just print out the flash cards and draw them one by one. The students can now cross the words off from their very own bingo cards. Once they have filled out the entire card, they can yell out the magic word, which is of course BINGO. You can decide for yourself if you also want to attach a prize to this in order to motivate your students even more. Finally, there are word lists.

Topics are varied and are accompanied by colorful graphics. Topics are meant to educate, yet entertain the modern student. These passages are perfect for the modern classroom. Whereas textbooks can become outdated in no time, any changes to technology or the world will result in updates to this product. Mixed Questions The mixed questions section of each lesson includes a variation of five comprehension, vocabulary and math questions. In addition, key reading strategies are frequently covered including cause & effect, summarizing, compare & contrast and making conclusions. Two or three of the questions will be MCQs and other questions will require a written response of some kind. Full answers and example responses appear at the end of the lesson. Spelling & Vocab Each reading passage contains a variety of words and phrases designed for Grade 4-5 students. Spelling and vocab activities provide the opportunity to build fluency with these words. As it can become quite mundane doing the same activities over and over, each lesson in a set will contain a different spelling and vocab activity . Activities include: spelling games, sentence match-ups, mixed-up text and decoding words from the lesson. Writing Prompts Writing prompts are designed to continue the theme or lessons learned in the story. Students are persuaded to write in a variety of ways and each prompt includes several cues to help. As with the spelling/vocab section, writing prompts will vary. This includes research pieces, reading responses, poetry and creative writing prompts. Full Answer Keys Full answer keys and sample responses are provided so no matter how busy you are, you know you're covered! Mixed question answers provide evidence from the text, math questions contain the relevant workings. Answers are designed for use by the teacher, but also suitable as a handout to the student. Just for Fun Each lesson will have a bonus extension exercise. This is something fun to extend the lesson with. You can find these at the end of each lesson, titled Just for Fun.
