Anti-Communist Frenzy in 1950s (McCarthyism) Lesson Plan
Social Studies, History, History: USA, History: World, Grade 9, 10, 11, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans
This is an Anti-Communist Frenzy in 1950s (McCarthyism) Lesson Plan. National Curriculum Standards: Learners will understand the impact across time and place of key historical forces, such as nationalism, imperialism, globalization, leadership, revolution, wars, concepts of rights and responsibilities, and religion. Specific Objectives: To analyze and evaluate the methods of interrogation of the McCarthy Era. To interview past historical characters. Materials: The worksheet provided here. Procedure: After a general lesson on the Cold War, it is important to understand how the Cold War affected Americans for a US History Class. After the Cold War lesson is over, explain briefly how people feared communism. Anyone suspected of being a communist was interrogated or put on a blacklist. Then tell the class that they’ll be FBI agents looking for communist spies. You are looking for at least two of them but there could be more. They will interrogate suspects and execute whoever they want. They should follow the instructions given on the worksheet which is self-explanatory. It is preferable that the class work in pairs for this activity. After they are done, ask them who they thought were the real spies. (Real spies were the Rosenberg’s and Alger Hiss. Give them away at the end after they have shared who they executed). Ask them how they selected their suspects and finally ask them whether the whole process was fair or not. Mention that even though after several decades when archives were released, we found that those three were real spies, the evidence provided at the time was circumstantial.

This is an Inca Achievements and Challenges Lesson. National Curriculum Standards: Learners will understand consequences of science and technology for individuals and societies. Learners will understand mechanisms by which governments meet the needs and wants of citizens, regulate territory, manage conflict, establish order and security, and balance competing conceptions of a just society. Specific Objectives: Students will come up with solutions to various challenges that the Inca faced, whether it be governmental or technological. In this way, students will learn the various Inca achievements. Materials: The worksheet provided here. Lesson: Before you learn about the various Inca achievements, you may want to lecture briefly on the historical characters and events responsible for Inca expansion and empire. After you have established the vastness of the Inca empire, then you can start teaching about the various Inca achievements. Mention that the Inca are known for very special features and achievements. For example, they built great buildings in earthquake zones that have stood the test of time (better than some of our modern Chilean buildings) without using mortar! Then tell students that they will all represent Inca government officials trying to come up to solutions to various challenges, which in turn will reveal the various Inca achievements. The worksheets are pretty self-explanatory for the students. You may want them to work in pairs. When students are finished, then you go over it by explaining how they really resolved the challenges. It doesn’t matter if they did not come up with an answer that was historical. The point is that they thought it through and that makes them remember it better when the real answer is given out to them in the end.

Harlem Renaissance and History of Jazz Lesson
Creative Arts, Art, Music, Grade 8, 9, 10, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans
This is a lesson plan for Harlem Renaissance and History of Jazz. Specific Objectives: Students will be able to describe the evolution of jazz as it went through the Harlem Renaissance. Materials: Worksheet provided Computer connected to youtube and some speakers Lesson: In this lesson, students will learn a brief history of jazz and the role the Harlem Renaissance played in it by actually immersing themselves in the music. A worksheet is provided in which students have to describe some of the music that is played on the computer. After each song is over, you ask them how they would describe it. Then you give your own “more educated” opinion on it. Basically, you walk the students through the evolution of jazz. Here is a rough “answer key”: The first song , for which you could choose any other, simply shows a contrast to jazz. It is classical music, which follows a score and is therefore a lot more structured. Old Blues has kind of a melancholic tone. It clearly arose amidst the hardships that African Americans went through. When the blues reached New Orleans, it became blended with opera, marching bands, African drumming, church music… and so the blues became more upbeat. Then music traveled to Harlem, NYC. One of the main characteristics of jazz is its improvisation. It is a symbol of freedom and liberation, in a way, a longing of the blues fulfilled. To the study the influence of Harlem, then play Duke Ellington, who kind of fueled the swing era. Modern jazz, which you could play anything you want, is a lot softer. It has become more “tamed” for everyone’s taste. By the end, it should be clear how much of the music that is enjoyed all over the world is attributable to African Americans and the Harlem Renaissance. Clickable YouTube links are included.
