Pre-Algebra Problem: The Wave Pool (Expressions, Tables, and Graphs)

Pre-Algebra Problem: The Wave Pool (Expressions, Tables, and Graphs)
Math, Algebra, Graphing, Grade 5, 6, 7, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Worksheets

This lesson is an excellent addition to a pre-algebra unit in grades 6 or 7 to help show students a real-world application of using expressions, tables of values, and graphing to solve a simple, everyday financial literacy decision. Students are tasked with deciding how to pay to visit a new wave pool in the neighbourhood. They can pay a flat monthly fee or pay a smaller fee and then pay a small amount each time they go. The trick will be determining how often they are likely to go each month. Students get to: Analyze a realistic scenario Complete two tables of values Write a pattern rule in words and turn it into an expression with a variable Create a simple line graph to compare the two options visually Explain their decision in words using evidence from their mathematical work This lesson can be used in various ways: it can be used during full-class instruction or smaller group activities. It could be regular classwork, a homework assignment, or even a summative assessment. I liked to have students complete it near the end of our algebra unit to assess skills before the unit test and to have as an artifact for parent-teacher conferences. An extension challenge is offered that is specifically designed for early finishers. A complete answer key is also included for easy marking out of twenty points. Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for upper elementary or middle school students in grades 5-7. It could also be used in high school special education classrooms. What's Included: 7 Page PDF with three page student assignment, title page, and complete answer key. If you enjoy this algebra activity , check out others in my store: Modelling Equations: Visual Balance Scales Independent and Dependent Variables in Grade 6 Math: Hockey Math Solving Systems of Equations Using Substitution Inequality Matching Game Exponent Board Game Writing and Solving Two-Step Equations

Theoretical & Experimental Probability: Hands-on Math Task with Fractions and Percentages
Math, Percentages, Fractions, Statistics, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Activities

Theoretical and Experimental Probability: A Hands-On Math Exercise (with Fractions and Percentages) This is a ready-to-use, engaging, two-page math activity designed for intermediate students in grade levels 4 through 7. The product lets your students easily conduct a simple probability experiment that will help them grasp the concepts of theoretical and experimental probabilities. They will also tie this learning into other math topics by converting fraction results into percentages. Items Needed: Paper bags filled with items that are red, yellow blue, and green. Ideal items can be Legos, blocks or counters. Bags should contain amounts of items that will easily convert from fractions to percentages- so 5 items, 10 items, 20 items, or 25 items are ideal. Features: Fits seamlessly into any probability or percentage unit Serves as excellent practice for reinforcing equivalent fraction and percentage concepts How to Use: Split students into small groups. Give each group a bag of items and a worksheet (double-sided) for each member. Students will explore their bag: count the total number of items, count how many there are of each colour, write each colour as a fraction, and convert that to a percentage. This is the theoretical probability of each event. Then they perform the experiment: pulling one item from the bag and replacing it twenty times. They will use a tally chart to record the colours pulled. They will turn their results (fractions out of 20) into percentages. This is the experimental probability. Finally, students reflect on if the theoretical and experimental probabilities matched or did not and why that could be. Grades to Use With: This activity is designed for students in grades 4-7 who are learning about equivalent fractions, percentages, and probability experiments. What's Included: 3 page PDF: Title Page and 2-page handout. Copy double sided and you are ready to go!

Order of Operations in Action: 5 Real-life Scenarios that use BEDMAS

Order of Operations in Action: 5 Real-life Scenarios that use BEDMAS
Math, Order Of Operations, Grade 5, 6, 7, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Worksheets

Order of Operations in Action: 5 Real-life Scenarios that use BEDMAS This teaching resource blends everyday real world situations with math knowledge, allowing students to solve word problems using simple mathematical equations and order of operations. It strives to show basic situations when we instinctively use order of operations to solve a multiple-step math problem: from making pancakes for a crowd to splitting the cost of pizzas with some friends. NOTE: Exponents are not used in this product. How to Use: Go through the sample problem with your class. Talk about how to turn the word problem into a simple equation. Then have your students solve the equation without order of operations and with order of operations. They should start to see why using order of operations helps get the correct answer. Then, allow students to work in pairs or small groups on the remaining four problems. For each one, students have to write their own equation and solve it with and without BEDMAS. Finally, early finishers can try to write their own sample problem to trade with a friend. What's included: A three-page PDF file containing two worksheets and an answer key: all visually-appealing and ready to print! Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed to be used in grades 5-7: when first introducing order of operations to your students, or as a real-world review of this important concept. Educational Goals: The primary objective is enriching students' comprehension and mastery surrounding the BEDMAS order of operations, minus exponents. The worksheets align well with key mathematical standards like CCSS5.OA.A.1 and CCSS5.OA.A.2. This project is applicable to subjects such as English Language Arts, social studies, life studies including government, finance, and home economics. Animal Project: Creative Creatures - Biomes, Structural, and Behavioral Adaptations
Science, Life Sciences, Biology, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Environmental Science, Research, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, Activities, Projects

Here's a middle grades science project (for grades 4-7) that will let your students use their creativity to apply their knowledge of biomes and adaptations as they complete research, integrate knowledge from several sources, type a report, and make a detailed diagram ! How to Use: Assign each student an animal or let them chose their own. They need to research that animal’s biome and the adaptations the animal currently has. Next, each student chooses a different biome and moves their animal there. They must use their imagination and logic to predict the adaptations the animal would develop in the new biome. Once each student has completed their notes, they can type or write a report to present the information. I encouraged my students to make a four-paragraph report: Paragraph one: describe initial biome Paragraph two: describe initial adaptations Paragraph three: describe new biome Paragraph four: describe new adaptations Students also create their own visual image of their creative creature (labels encouraged). I like to put all the reports and images together into a class book. This is fun way to showcase the students’ hard work. I have included the title page I use for our class book. I have also included the rubric I use to assess the projects. Graces to Use With: This product is appropriate for students in grades 4-7 depending on when your science curriculum includes biomes, structural/physical and behavioural adaptations, or diversity of life standards. What's Included: A total of 6 pages in PDF Format: - Lesson ideas, links and videos to teach students about biomes and structural and behavioural adaptations. - A 2-page graphic organizer for students to take notes as they complete research. - A rubric to assess the final project. - A title page for your completed class book.
