Critical Thinking: Social Programs: More, Fewer, or Just Right?
Life Studies, Social Studies, Finance, Home Economics, Government, Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

Critical Thinking: Social Programs: More, Fewer, or Just Right A comprehensive teaching resource designed for high school students studying in grades 9-12: this lesson will help your students think about their society as it currently is and how they would like it to be in the future. This project is applicable to subjects such as English Language Arts, social studies, life studies including government, finance, and home economics. This product provokes critical thought about social programs and their role in the community by exploring queries like: What are social programs? Have they been around a long time? Why are they needed? Who manages them? How are they funded? Why do some people dislike them? After your students have learned these key facts from the one-page handout, they will complete research to determine which social programs exist in the region they live in (social programs might include pension, healthcare, parental leave, emergency services, education, etc.). A two-page graphic organizer is included to help your students stay organized as they research which programs are available, what level of government manages each one, and where the funding is collected from. Three sample answers are included that you can show to your class before they start. Finally, students are asked to use what they have learned to plan and write a persuasive essay about their thoughts on social programs. Should there be more of them, fewer, or is it just right? A one-page essay organizer is also included. Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for students in high school classes (grades 9-12). Students need the ability to complete research online to find social programs in their region and they should know how to write a persuasive essay. This lesson could be applied in English Language Arts, Career and Personal Planning, Finance, Government, or Home Economics courses. What's Included: A total of 8 pages in PDF Format: Title Page and Teacher Instructions Student Handout 2-Page Graphic Organizer for Research 1-Page Essay Organizer Sample Answers and Answer Key

Animal Project: Creative Creatures - Biomes, Structural, and Behavioral Adaptations

Animal Project: Creative Creatures - Biomes, Structural, and Behavioral Adaptations
Science, Life Sciences, Biology, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Environmental Science, Research, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, Activities, Projects

Here's a middle grades science project (for grades 4-7) that will let your students use their creativity to apply their knowledge of biomes and adaptations as they complete research, integrate knowledge from several sources, type a report, and make a detailed diagram ! How to Use: Assign each student an animal or let them chose their own. They need to research that animal’s biome and the adaptations the animal currently has. Next, each student chooses a different biome and moves their animal there. They must use their imagination and logic to predict the adaptations the animal would develop in the new biome. Once each student has completed their notes, they can type or write a report to present the information. I encouraged my students to make a four-paragraph report: Paragraph one: describe initial biome Paragraph two: describe initial adaptations Paragraph three: describe new biome Paragraph four: describe new adaptations Students also create their own visual image of their creative creature (labels encouraged). I like to put all the reports and images together into a class book. This is fun way to showcase the students’ hard work. I have included the title page I use for our class book. I have also included the rubric I use to assess the projects. Graces to Use With: This product is appropriate for students in grades 4-7 depending on when your science curriculum includes biomes, structural/physical and behavioural adaptations, or diversity of life standards. What's Included: A total of 6 pages in PDF Format: - Lesson ideas, links and videos to teach students about biomes and structural and behavioural adaptations. - A 2-page graphic organizer for students to take notes as they complete research. - A rubric to assess the final project. - A title page for your completed class book. Olympic Games Writing Challenge | Cities, sports, challenges, & wins!
ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Grammar, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Games, Activities

Getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. The Olympic games inspire so many young people. In this narrative writing assignment, students will choose their city and sport, as well as what went wrong and what went well. Including the appropriate sequence of events, as well as a conflict is key. Thinking about the way we think is a foundational skill for growing the executive functions our kiddos will use in the editing process. For this reason, a short checklist has been included at the end of page 4 so that learners can begin to go back and check their work. This key skill in developing healthy executive functioning is intentionally made visible to students to prompt ownership over the quality of their writing. STANDARDS: Meets CCSS Writing standards for grades 2-5. Don't forget to check out the Chef's Toolbox, Superhero's Toolbox, and Astronaut's Toolbox activities for more fun! These activities can be used with a whole class in addition to the writing challenge printable. This printable is optimal for 2nd-5th graders who enjoy learning about space and demonstrating their knowledge of it. By using the included matrix to choose the setting, challenge, and characters in their story, they'll use the freedom afforded them to create something they love. *Note, some learners may require a basic explanation of what stocks, investments, and savings accounts are. BONUS: Take advantage of the 4 extension activity ideas included in this printable. These activities will take their writing beyond the page and bring it to life in STEAM-supported outlets. What you'll get: a 4 page PDF including instructions, extension activity ideas, and 3 student pages. Line Graph Assessment: Real-Life Math Problem for a Graphing Unit

Line Graph Assessment: Real-Life Math Problem for a Graphing Unit
Math, Graphing, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, Lesson Plans, Teacher Tools

Line Graph Assessment : Real-Life Math Problem for a Graphing Unit This learning resource is perfect for educators teaching general math classes to grade 5-8, or high school special education classes with applied mathematics. It focuses on enhancing students' graphing and interpretation skills through a real-life scenario - a bike ride. How to Use: I used this task as a summative assessment at the end of my line graphing unit. Students had learned how to make line graphs, how to determine an appropriate scale, how to determine if the data is continuous or discrete and if the points of data should be joined, and how to read and interpret line graphs. This simple task melds all of those skills into one, easy-to-mark assessment . It allowed me to accurately assess my students' learning from the whole unit and was a great artifact to use for report card writing or parent conferences. Students are given the data from a bike ride (hours biked vs kilometers travelled), and they need to create a line graph with all of the appropriate features. Then, they will answer questions to determine their ability to interpret the data they have been given. Evaluation Areas: Determining logical vertical and horizontal scales and constructing accurately labelled line graphs/plots. Understanding how data is collected. Differentiating between discrete and continuous data. Interpreting line graphs/plots effectively. Making reasoned conclusions from specific sets of data. Identifying fractional/decimal information between different data points. Grades to Use With: This assessment is designed for students in grades 5-8 or in high school special education classes. What's Included: A total of 4 pages in PDF Format: Title Page 2 Page Assessment for Students 1 Page Answer Key: to easily assess each student out of 20 marks If you enjoy this real world math activity, check out many others in my store: Grace Under Pressure.

Getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. Create-A-Savings Story Writing Challenge |Saving, Spending, Generosity

Create-A-Savings Story Writing Challenge |Saving, Spending, Generosity
ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Grammar, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

Getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. Money can be a tricky topic to teach. Even so, we know kids need to be better prepared than we were with regards to financial literacy. Investing, spending, saving, and generosity are all twists and turns kids can take as they get their imaginations rolling! One of these pages is simply writing space for you to print off as many copies as you need based on the amount your students are writing. You'll also find the editing checklist to prompt students to edit their own work for spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.
