Types of Investment Accounts (USA): 401k, Roth IRA, Brokerage Teach your high school students about financial literacy and crucial life skills they will need as an adult as you introduce them to five kinds of investment accounts that exist in the United States of America. How to Use: This ready-to-go lesson has several parts: 1) Decide if you want to give your students the completed handout OR the version where they have to fill in some information. The handout teaches them about five kind of investment accounts: Traditional IRA, Traditional 401k, Roth IRA, Roth 401k, and Brokerage accounts. For each account students learn about basic rules and the tax implications when investing, growing and selling. Each account has its own pros and cons. You can go over this part of the lesson as a class so students can ask questions and gain a strong understanding. 2) Then assign the two worksheets to your students: vocabulary matching and comprehension questions. Students can work individually or in pairs or small groups to complete these. The matching could also be assigned for homework if desired. 3) A complete answer key is included for easy marking and to remove any guesswork! This lesson has been updated with the 2023 contribution room limits. Trickle-Down Economics: Reading Comp. & Reflection for High School
Social Studies, Life Studies, ELA, Economics, Government, Finance, Business, Reading, Reading Comprehension, Writing, Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans

Trying to get your high school students interested in economics and recent history? Want to explain why Millennials and younger generations have a hard time ever getting ahead financially? Here's a ready-to-go lesson about supply side economics (also known as Trickle Down Economics or Reganomics). What's Included: This lesson has four parts in an easy to use 7 page PDF: First, students will tackle a 2-page reading comprehension passage about Trickle-Down Economics. This passage teaches the basic history behind this economic idea, what it is supposed to do, and what it has actually done. Ideas such as capitalism, Marxism, and progressive income taxes are included and explained. It is assumed that students have little to no experience with these topics. Next, students will learn new vocabulary by defining nine important terms including capitalism, profits, bourgeoisie, proletariat, progressive income taxes, capital gains tax, corporate taxes, and income inequality. Then, students will answer eight comprehension questions about the reading passage. This section encourages critical thinking, close reading, and analysis. Finally, students will write a one-paragraph reflection, where they can start to formulate their own personal opinions. A complete answer key is also included to eliminate any guesswork and make marking a snap. Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for high school students in grades 9-12 in social studies, business , or economics classes. It could also be used in high school English classrooms as a non-fiction reading comprehension and vocabulary passage. Lifestyle Creep: Personal Finance Worksheets and Financial Literacy

Lifestyle Creep: Personal Finance Worksheets and Financial Literacy
Life Studies, Math, Money, Finance, Home Economics, Grade 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

Lifestyle Creep: Personal Financial Literacy Lesson about Spending Carefully This engaging personal finance lesson highlights the key principle of successful financial planning - 'Always spend less than you earn!'. It demonstrates financial concepts through practical and relatable examples, including a comparison between a high-income earner and lower-income earner: you might be surprised who is doing better financially! How to Use: First, a handout introduces two characters- Raya, who earns $5000 monthly but saves $50 each month; contrasted with Lucien, an affluent lawyer who makes $20,000 monthly but overspends by $50 each month. These personas bring vital insights into the consequences of prudent versus extravagant financial habits over time. Next. the concept of "Lifestyle Creep" is introduced. It is when your standard of living permanently increases when your income does: things that used to be luxuries become everyday expectations. For example, acquiring new ski gear prompts related expenses like annual ski passes or one-time investments like car ski rack installations. Then, students brainstorm common items of Lifestyle Creep that Lucien may have incorporated into his daily expectations. Finally, they practice noticing and calculating Lifestyle Creep with two real world examples: moving to a bigger apartment or adopting a pet. A complete answer key is also included to eliminate any guesswork! Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for high school students in grades 8-12 in Career and Personal Planning, finance, applied math, life skills, or high school special education classes. It could also be used for grade 7 enrichment. What's Included: This ready-to-go lesson is an easy to print PDF that includes a two-page handout, two pages of practice activities, and an answer key.
