CNN - The 2000s: Mission Accomplished
Social Studies, History, History: USA, Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
When discussing the "Iraqi war" with our students, it's crucial to provide clarity due to the multiple conflicts that term can denote. Iraq has witnessed a series of wars and military interventions, and the context can change dramatically depending on the time period in question. Most notable is the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003, aimed at toppling Saddam Hussein's regime. This war was primarily justified by the Bush administration on the premise of eradicating weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). However, despite thorough searches, these weapons were never discovered. This war sparked significant debate and controversy both domestically and internationally. The aftermath of this invasion led to a prolonged phase of instability and insurrection in Iraq. Although U.S. forces officially left Iraq in 2011, the nation grappled with continuous unrest and upheaval. A particularly concerning development was the rise of ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) in 2014. Responding to this threat, the Iraqi government, bolstered by regional and global allies, initiated campaigns to oppose ISIS and by 2017, had regained control of most territories. For educators looking to delve deeper into this topic with their classes, I've curated a set of 12 questions accompanying a video resource on the subject. These questions are structured to ensure that our students extract key insights and foster a comprehensive understanding of the various facets of Iraq's contemporary history. Ready to use - no prep! Excellent for AP courses! Thumbnail clipart credit: by Prince Padania

The Sixties: "The War in Vietnam" - CNN
Social Studies, History, History: USA, History: World, Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
As we delve into the intricacies of 20th-century history with our students, the Vietnam War stands out as a topic of immense significance. Spanning from November 1, 1955, to April 30, 1975, this contentious conflict in Vietnam is renowned for its complex nuances and its profound implications. Key Considerations Regarding the Vietnam War: Historical Roots: The war had its origins in Vietnam's quest for sovereignty post its colonial period under French rule. Cold War Undertones: This war wasn't merely a regional conflict; it was emblematic of the larger Cold War tensions. While the U.S. extended its support to anti-communist South Vietnam, North Vietnam drew backing from the Soviet Union and China, especially for its communist faction under Ho Chi Minh. Lasting Impacts: Vietnam suffered a colossal loss - in human lives, environmental degradation, and socio-economic aftermath. Conversely, in the U.S., the war instigated a period of introspection, leading to questions about its foreign policy decisions. Additionally, the war's aftershocks resonated deeply among the veterans and the American public, fostering divisions that persist in various forms even today. A Legacy Preserved: The Vietnam War is not just confined to history books; it permeates literature, film, and academic research. It offers invaluable lessons that continue to guide our conversations on international diplomacy, warfare implications, and decision-making in foreign policy. For educators eager to provide a comprehensive and engaging overview of the Vietnam War, I'd like to introduce a resource I've found invaluable. Accompanying the CNN video series, which offers insightful footage and expert analysis on the Vietnam conflict, I've curated a set of 21 questions and a graphical representation that captures the essence of the war. This series does an exemplary job of presenting both the international and domestic reactions to the Vietnam events. Moreover, to facilitate ease of instruction, this package is complete with a detailed teacher's key. It's a plug-and-play solution requiring zero preparation – especially effective for Advanced Placement courses. I believe this resource can greatly enhance our students' grasp of the Vietnam War and its pivotal moments. You can find the video here: CNN-The Sixties: The War in Vietnam

Student Behavior Contract: In English and Spanish
Resources for Teachers, Classroom Management, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8,
Classroom management is not merely about maintaining decorum but essentially about creating a conducive environment where each student feels engaged, motivated, and accountable. It's our foundation for fostering an atmosphere of respect, discipline, and academic success. Key Principles of Classroom Management: Clear Guidelines: It's crucial to set explicit rules, routines, and behavioral expectations from day one. This clarity ensures students are aware of what is acceptable and what isn't, which significantly reduces misunderstandings and disruptions. Consistent Enforcement: Equally important as setting rules is the consistent application of these rules. It's imperative for students to understand that consequences, both rewards, and corrective measures, will always follow their actions. From my personal experience, beginning each academic year with a clear system aids immensely. I've developed student contracts that encapsulate our classroom expectations. Printing these on colored card stock paper (I optimistically prepare around 50 pages at the start of the year) makes them stand out and signifies their importance. Features of the Student Contracts: Versatility: Whether it's a case of tardiness or a lapse in respectful behavior, the contract covers it all. Students are introduced to these contracts during my initial classroom management presentation, setting the tone right from the outset. Categories Covered: Tardiness Classroom Behavior Respect & Respect to Teacher Acceptable Language Harmonious Relations with Peers Abstaining from Put-downs Timely Submission of Homework Efficient Utilization of Class Time User-friendly Design: The contract's design ensures minimal time spent by teachers in filling it out, yet it remains clear and comprehensible for students. Having these contracts in place acts as both a deterrent and a teaching tool. It's a practical way to make students more aware of their responsibilities and the consequences of their actions. I invite you all to incorporate this tool into your classroom management strategy and hope you find it as valuable as I have. Here’s a ready-to-go math inquiry activity for your geometry unit. Students are tasked with drawing all the rectangles they can create with a specific area (24 units squared). Then, they calculate the perimeter of each rectangle. Finally, a prompt helps them notice the relationship between area and perimeter. Shapes that are longer and thinner will have a larger perimeter than other shapes with the same area. How to Use: Use this activity once your students have already had some practice calculating area and perimeter of rectangles. You could do a quick mini lesson about finding factors before handing out this activity , as your students need to determine the factors of 24 to complete this task (1x24, 2x12, 3x8 4x6). I let students work in pairs or small groups to complete this task as I want them talking about their math ideas! Grades to Use With: This math project is designed for students in grades 3-6 who are learning about area and perimeter of right-angle shapes (rectangles). In the USA, this is in Common Core Standards in the third grade and in British Columbia, Canada, it is addressed in Grade 5. What's Included: 2 Page PDF: Student worksheet and Complete Answer Key If you enjoy this math project, check out others in my store! The escape room is a no-prep, digital resource, designed to make learning fun and exciting for students. With this interactive digital platform students will solve twenty problems related to place value, aiming to collect badges as they successfully navigate through the challenges. This is a zero prep resource! You just share a link, and the students can dive right in, using any device with internet connectivity. There is no need to hide clues or set up locks. Plus, it's so user-friendly; the kids won’t need any prior experience with platforms like Google Classroom or Microsoft Teams. There is also no login hassles which means instant access and fewer tech glitches. The escape room 's main goal is for students to answer all the problems correctly to gather all the badges. It's structured in such a way that it encourages perseverance, making sure the kids are thoroughly engaged till the end. They can work on it independently or even as teams, so it's versatile for in-class or distance learning. And for those who still love the touch of paper or want an extra resource, there's a printable version of all the questions. In essence, this is a fun, engaging, and interactive way to brush up on the Decimals Place Value concepts with your 6th graders! Some ways I thought it could be used include: Extra materials for students who might need some more practice. A fun activity for rewarding the class or perhaps a “Fun Friday” session. Ideal for those hectic days leading up to holiday breaks. And, in a pinch, it can even be a lifesaver for last-minute sub lesson plans. You can find more of my escape rooms here!
