Character Analysis, Gift for a Character Oral Presentation offers teachers a comprehensive and multi-dimensional unit designed for 6th to 9th grade students. The dynamic 60-page unit offers teachers everything they need to help their students become better readers, writers, and thinkers as they explore character conflicts and development in a novel, write and essay, and present their character to the class with 3 unique gifts suited to their character's dilemmas and development. The unit includes 10 standards-aligned mini-lessons with teaching points, an essential question and 3 guiding questions, a helpful About the Resource that includes everything you need to know in one table, a hyper-linked table of contents, 3 rubrics (1 for the essay and 2 for the presentation), several peer and self-response worksheets, a self-reflection handout for students after they have written their essay, and a mentor text for students to color-code as they analyze the essay. Depending on your time and the needs of your students, the unit can take 2-4 weeks. The Essential Question: "How do authors use characterization to convey themes and develop their narratives?" and the 3 guiding questions: "How do authors introduce and develop characters throughout the story?" "What techniques do authors employ to reveal characters' traits, motivations, and relationships?" and "How do characters' actions, dialogue, and interactions contribute to the overall meaning of the text?" help orient students to the key points they will be exploring as they choose their thesis statement or claim and develop their main points, find relevant evidence, and thoughtfully and deeply analyze the evidence.
