Timelines are one of those history tools that seem simple until you try to find one that fits the lesson you are teaching. Sometimes students only need to organize five major events. A longer unit, biography, or research project may require space for ten, twelve, or even sixteen events. I created this collection so teachers can choose the timeline that makes the most sense for their students and the topic being studied. You will not need to squeeze a long unit onto a page that is too small or give students a large, complicated timeline when only a few events are needed. This printable PDF includes timeline templates for 5, 8, 10, 12, and 16 events. Each layout comes in a colorful version and a matching black-and-white version. The black-and-white pages are helpful when you want to conserve colored ink or let students add their own color. Each numbered event box contains: A blank line for the event name A labeled line for the date or year An additional line for a short fact or explanation The numbered boxes help students keep their events in chronological order. I intentionally left the circles and connecting lines off the student templates. After students complete their event boxes, they decide where each event belongs on the central timeline and draw their own connections. This gives them an opportunity to think about sequence and placement instead of simply copying a timeline that has already been arranged for them. A directions page is included to walk students through the process. I also included a completed five-event example based on the American Revolution. The example shows students how to add event names, dates, brief details, and connecting lines without limiting the blank templates to one particular historical period. Teachers can use these pages during a history or social studies unit, as part of a research project, for biography studies, in an interactive notebook, or as an end-of-unit review. They can also work well for independent practice, small groups, homework, substitute plans, or homeschool lessons. For younger students or shorter lessons, the five-event template provides a manageable starting point. Older students can use the versions with more events for detailed units, longer historical periods, and multi-step research projects. Since the pages are not labeled by grade, the same collection can be used with upper elementary, middle school, and high school students. There is no traditional answer key because the completed timelines will depend on the topic selected by the teacher or student. The completed American Revolution page serves as a model. This resource is provided as one 13-page, landscape-oriented PDF. Teachers can print only the pages they need rather than printing the entire collection.
