Students work through twenty actual-unit-rate word problems set in four escape room winter scenes: The Snack Shack, Skating Trail, Yeti Workshop, and Penguin Performance. Students work with word problems related to cost, distance, time, and quantity from the everyday experience they realize from using unit rates. In order to progress, students must compute the correct answer and type it into the escape room. The escape room is a completely self-contained activity, which means students will not be able to progress with an incorrect answer, making this activity perfect for independent practice. One of the most beneficial aspects of this resource is the low level of work that it generates. There is no prep work that is necessary. You don’t have to set up anything, including logins and passwords and lock screens. The math project incorporates useful personal finance and financial literacy skills along with realistic budgeting. Each student in your class is going to plan their purchases for a summer camping trip with friends! How to Use: You will assign each student in your class a budget (I recommend between $400-$1,750). A $400 budget will be challenging, and the student might only be able to bring one friend and buy mainly low-cost items. On the other hand, a $1,750 budget will be much more luxurious, and that student will be able to more friends and choose many fancy items. Students work within their budgets, picking a low, middle, or high-cost choice for each category (tent, sleeping bag, cooler chairs, food and more). Certain items must be multiplied by the total number of campers while others (like a stove) do not. Students will add up their eleven choices and make sure they stay within their budget. They might need to make a few trade-offs and skip desired items to ensure they have the things they can't camp without. Finally, your students will calculate how much money they have left, and they will answer reflection questions shopping within a budget, earning more money, or buying things used. A self-checking digital math mission built to support daily spiral review or warm-ups in 6th grade. This is the fifth mission I have available, and it is designed to take about ten minutes (easy to fit into a class period when review is due, or at the end of a day when students need to focus but time is short!) Students answer five math review questions on one interactive page, using the first digit of each answer to create a five-digit numeric code. When the correct number code is entered, the mission is finished (and when the incorrect number code is entered, nothing is unlocked, forcing students to go back and check their work). Mission 5 follows the same format as all of the other mini escape rooms above, so once your students know the routine, each mission will take very little prep/explaining before students can complete it! No prep escape! Assign and go, without creating locks or accounts. This digital escape activity is self-checking and perfect for independent, small group, or whole class. A printable worksheet version of the digital mini escape room is also included to allow for use in classrooms with limited technology, homework, or substitute days.
