Here is an 8th grade math lesson that incorporates Indigenous cultural learning along with math skills for calculating surface area and volume, drawing different views of 3-D objects, and constructing nets for 3-D objects. Students will learn about indigenous bentwood boxes and practice drawing nets of these items to help calculate surface area and volume in real-world scenarios. How to Use: Print four pages of worksheets for each student. Go through the first page together to learn about bentwood boxes. Either show the video and webpages to the whole class or let students complete research in pairs or small groups. They must sketch at least one bentwood box and take some notes. Next, students complete calculations with the sample red box. NOTE: Assume the lid sits ON the sides (and does not cover the sides) like a true bentwood box. I have only used right angles here, which is not completely realistic for a bentwood box, but is appropriate for this level of math. The sides of the lid would have to be thick for this to work in real life. Students calculate the volume and surface area of the box and consider how capacity is different than volume in this case. On pages three and four, students draw nets for the three pieces of the bentwood box and use a simple scale (1 grid square = 8cm). Remind them that the box’s sides are made from one continuous piece of wood that is scored and bent. Finally, students can create a design on their net. See if they can determine what way the pieces fit together to ensure their design is oriented correctly. This is a great way to apply geometry learning to a real-life task, and it incorporates indigenous culture into your math classroom. Grades to Use With: This lesson was specifically designed for British Columbia Mathematics 8 curriculum, but it can work in any classroom that is learning about surface area, volume, and nets of 3-D shapes in grades 6, 7, or 8. Here's a fun and hands-on way for your students to practice estimating square roots & cube roots using logical mental math strategies and known benchmarks. It's a simple matching game for students in 8th & 9th grade when they are learning about square roots & cube roots in math class. How to Use: Print a worksheet for each of your students along with a set of 24 matching cards for each group of two to four students. First, students need to complete their Square and Cube Roots Cheat Sheet. Give them time in class to do this in pairs or small groups. I find that my students love learning this skill: it makes them feel mature and gives them ownership over their learning. How to Use: This 8-page booklet guides students to calculate their scores as percentages, offering them an interesting hands-on experience in crunching numbers. The mini-unit features various problem-solving methods supported by detailed visuals, explanatory notes, practice questions, and partner-focused activities. The content ranges from dealing with equivalent fractions with easily convertible denominators (10, 20, 25) to complex conversions involving more than one-step. Dividing the numerator by the denominator is also explored as a strategy to use with ANY test score. I go through the pages of the booklet with my students over several classes. Property Taxes: What they are, rates around the world, what they are used for, and how to calculate them! A great way to practice percent to decimal conversions, decimal operations, and rate and ratio learning! This two-page life skills and math worksheet is a quick and easy personal financial literacy activity for your middle or high school students. The Handout portion introduces your students to: Important vocabulary and definitions: property tax and a home’s assessed value. A variety of global property tax rates (ranging from 0.08% – 2.64%) in locations in the United States, Canada, and even Europe. A prompt about why rates vary (lower rates where property is expensive and higher rates where property is cheaper) is also included. What the money collected from property tax revenues is used for: from schools to sewers and roads to emergency services including fire fighters. The Worksheet portion has real-world math practice for your class: Students are taught how they can calculate an annual property tax amount using percentages converted to decimals. First, they practice converting between percents and decimals. Then, they multiply a home's assessed value by the property tax percentage (written as a decimal) in the municipality. 10 practice math questions are included for your students to work on. Finally, they will research the local property tax rate in their area: great real-life learning! A COMPLETE ANSWER KEY INCLUDED- so there is no guesswork when marking! Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for any students in grades 7-12 who understand percent to decimal conversions, ratios and rates, and decimal operations (specifically multiplying a large number by a decimal).
