About This Product
- Setting up a light source: This provides real-world interplay of shadow and highlight on objects that students can observe, learn from, and apply in their own renderings.
- Drawing practice: Students put pencil to paper after this setup process depicting the object they've chosen creatively implementing various pencil techniques paying special attention towards texture enhancement.
- Texture & value addition: The penultimate step includes adding more depth by shading or using specific techniques creating an impression of desired three-dimensionality on a flat paper surface.
- Further exploration (if time permits): Once these core activities are completed, further artistic challenge tasks can be added such as sketching drop shadows beneath objects.

- &bull A varied set of pencils (4H-2H-HB-2B-4B)
- &bull An eraser for necessary corrections or adding effects
- &bull Any object of their choosing such as potted plants, toys, a bowl filled with popcorn etc., to be used as subjects for the illustration.

Materials Needed:
• 1-2 sheets of 9X12 drawing paper
• Drawing pencils in 4H, 2H, HB, 2B, and 4B
• Eraser
• Filled container to draw such as a potted plant, bowl of popcorn, or vase of
flowers
• Light source such as a portable lamp or window

An illustration is a drawing, handmade or digital, that is used to explain or decorate.
Typically, illustrations are seen in combination with text in books or graphics to help
the viewer understand a concept. Can you think of some examples of where you
might see illustrations? (PAUSE, wait for response) Illustrations are used in children’s
books, textbooks, science diagrams, and informational texts such as pamphlets or
business cards.
