Breaking the Big Words | Volume 3, Set 1

Breaking the Big Words Volume 3 focuses on closed, two- and three-syllable words following VC/V patterns to help younger elementary students master decoding. This critical reading skill builds confidence as emerging readers tackle more complex words. The activities scaffold syllable division using visual supports. Students first break apart new words focusing on a specific syllable type. Next, they break familiar word types to reinforce skills. Finally, they divide words while reading sentences to apply and generalize the strategy. As students progress, the visual scaffolds are removed to build independence. Additional practice reading decodable texts, stories, or content vocabulary boosts generalization. This volume builds success through mastery of each syllable type before advancing.
