Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Students describe the personality and role of each of the novel's nine major characters.

  • Students summarize the plot events of each of the novel's eight parts in sequence.

  • Students identify and describe six key settings the story takes place in.

  • Students write an extended personal response connecting a novel theme (kindness, bullying, or being an outsider) to their own experience.

Teaching tips

  • Assign the character and setting grids as reading unfolds rather than after finishing the book, since most characters and settings appear gradually across the eight parts.

  • Use the eight part-summary boxes as a running reading log, filling one in after finishing each of the novel's eight narrated sections.

  • Choose one or two of the five essay prompts per class rather than assigning all five, since each calls for an extended written response.

Skills covered

  • Character analysis — students describe personality, traits and role for each of 9 major characters.

  • Setting identification — students identify and describe 6 key locations from the novel.

  • Sequential summarization — students summarize each of the novel's 8 narrated parts in the boxes provided.

  • Theme-based essay writing — students write extended responses on kindness, bullying, or a personal connection to the protagonist's experience.
