SPANISH VERSION - SORTING NON IDENTICAL OBJECTS BY COLOR

-Why we teach sorting and grouping objects-

Sorting and grouping are important skills for young children to learn because they lay the foundation for many other important academic and life skills. Sorting and grouping involve categorizing objects based on common attributes such as color, shape, size, and function. These skills help children to understand and make sense of the world around them.

Here are some reasons why teaching sorting and grouping is important for young children:

  1. Cognitive Development: Sorting and grouping helps children develop important cognitive skills such as pattern recognition, problem solving, and logical thinking. By sorting objects into categories, children are able to recognize similarities and differences, which helps them understand how things are related to one another.

  2. Math Skills: Sorting and grouping are foundational math skills. These skills help children understand concepts such as counting, number recognition, and basic arithmetic. When children sort objects based on size or shape, they are developing an understanding of spatial relationships, which is important for geometry.

  3. Language Development: Sorting and grouping also help children develop their language skills. As they sort and group objects, they are able to label and describe them. This helps children build their vocabulary and practice using language in a meaningful way.

  4. Problem Solving: Sorting and grouping are important problem-solving skills. When children sort objects, they are often faced with challenges such as figuring out which category an object belongs to or deciding how to group objects that have multiple attributes. These challenges help children develop critical thinking skills and learn how to solve problems in a systematic way.

  5. Life Skills: Sorting and grouping are important life skills that children will use throughout their lives. These skills are essential for organizing items at home or at work, for planning and decision-making, and for understanding and participating in social and cultural activities.

This activity is simple and engaging.

To teach this activity, you will need two large cards - one red and one blue, and twelve smaller cards - six cards that have pictures of non-identical blue objects and six cards that have red non-identical objects.

example for teaching this activity:

  1. -Start by introducing the two large color cards to the children and ask them to identify the colors.

  2. -Then, show them the smaller cards and ask them to identify the colors of these cards as well.

  3. -Explain to the children that they need to sort the smaller cards onto the larger color cards based on their colors.

  4. -Model the activity by sorting a few cards yourself and asking the children to observe.

  5. -Once you have modeled the activity, give each child a set of smaller cards and ask them to sort them onto the corresponding color card.

  6. -As the children are sorting, observe and offer support and guidance as needed. Encourage them to talk about the colors and objects they see.

  7. Once all the cards have been sorted, review the activity with the children by asking them questions like "What did you learn today?" or "What was your favorite part of the activity?"

This color sorting activity is a great way to help young children develop their visual discrimination skills, color recognition skills, and cognitive skills. It also promotes socialization and communication skills as children share their thoughts and ideas with each other.

The pages are clear of visual distractions which helps the learner focus on the task. This activity is easy to create - laminate all cards, cut out the individual sorting cards and velcro to the corresponding activity mat. You can hole punch the mats and put them in a binder for many years of teaching and learning.
