About this resource

Practise subtracting mixed numbers with varied fractional denominators. Pupils work with equivalent fractions and rename where necessary before recording each difference. Use a selected problem to model the order of those decisions, then encourage pupils to keep their intermediate steps visible.

Curriculum reference — England: The task requires more than like-denominator subtraction; assess the actual fraction range. Mixed-number subtraction uses equivalent fractions and is a limited connection to Ontario Grade7 fraction operations. England Year6 explicitly includes different denominators and mixed-number operations. Selected skills only; reference stage is not an overall reading age, complete curriculum coverage, or an automatic recommendation for every learner.
