Choice boards are a great way to reach many interests and abilities in diverse classrooms. Whether needing to differentiate higher or lower, the variety of assignment options allows for student choice at their appropriate response level, and allows teachers to see what students truly grasp from the texts they are reading. From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, written by E.L. Konigsburg, is a novel appropriate for 3rd through 5th grades. The choice board includes nine activities and multiple rubrics for teacher choice in grading. The tasks are as follows: creating a book jacket cover + summarizing research and present about a famous artist or sculptor timeline creation of important events (plot) personal writing experiences character map creation (character + plot) brochure creation compare and contrasting (characters) poem writing paragraph writing Each activity included either has a direction sheet with specific instructions or an actual worksheet to guide them through the tasks they fill out. The expectation is set for students to complete three activities in a tic-tac-toe format, but can be utilized in different ways in each classroom. Rubrics are included that allow for open response (and more information included from students), as well as teacher choice in how to assess student knowledge. This is a Consumers + Producers: Economics Role Play. In this role play, there are eleven businesses under four categories. The businesses include: Food/Restaurants: Downtown Diner Bake Me Happy The Farmer's Market Clothing Stores: Sew What Cozy Clothing Beautiful Boutique Recreation Stores: Spikes Bikes Outdoor Store Misc. Stores: The General Store Best Pets Once Upon A Time Bookstore Depending on class size, one student should be responsible for each business . Each student will have different roles. Some students will be business owners, some students will be consumers and one or more students will be headquarters. This activity is a fun, hands-on activity to teach about opportunity costs, goods, services, consumers, producers, etc. This is a great activity for grades 3rd through 7th grade. The activity includes a detailed procedure and sample room set-ups to make the planning and implementing process easier. The labels for the businesses are fun and colorful. Students could also design their own business signs.
