Personal Carbon Emissions: Integrated Math and Earth Science Lesson What can people do to help protect planet earth? Can middle school students learn about global warming, climate change, and carbon emissions in an age-appropriate way? Can they determine their personal carbon footprint? This integrated science and math lesson contains everything you need to tackle these issues! A one-page handout that demonstrates the relationships between human use of fossil fuels, greenhouse gases, and climate change in straight-forward and easy to understand language (with helpful visuals). A two-page personal carbon emissions calculation worksheet. Students will apply basic decimal calculations (addition, multiplication) to calculate their estimated emissions of greenhouse gas equivalents per year. This is one reason we like to incorporate music in our learning environments. We don’t have to limit music to music class only for our students. In my store, you’ll find a wide array of music resources that students will love to learn from. This is a music video for your math students in 4th – 6th grade. The title of this song is “The Metric Family.” This is a song and video that will have students learn about different metric units of measurement. This video provides explanations and many examples to support student learning. You can implement this video at the introduction of teaching this math skill. The objective is for students to correctly identify metric units such as mass, meter and grams. This would be a song that I play multiple times for my students across the course of this unit . Here is a quick no-prep game for any elementary classroom: The Rhyme Game ! It helps teach vocabulary, syllables, rhyme, and prefixes. This product includes a one-page instruction sheet including the skills taught, different player configurations, rules, a sample round, and extension ideas. This game requires NO PREP and NO MATERIALS other than writing implements. I suggest whiteboards to save paper. In this narrative writing assignment, students will choose their city and sport, as well as what went wrong and what went well. Including the appropriate sequence of events, as well as a conflict is key. Thinking about the way we think is a foundational skill for growing the executive functions our kiddos will use in the editing process. For this reason, a short checklist has been included at the end of page 4 so that learners can begin to go back and check their work. This key skill in developing healthy executive functioning is intentionally made visible to students to prompt ownership over the quality of their writing.
