This is an engaging math project that lets students apply math skills to a realistic situation: opening their own store! Grades to Use With: This project is perfect to use with your middle grades students in grades 5-8. It could also be a great addition to a high school life skills class studying finance, business, or careers. How to Use: Each of your students has won $2,000,000 in the lottery, and they are going to use it to open their very own store! They create a budget for a new business venture by considering the costs to rent a commercial storefront in your area, pay employees, and buy all of the supplies and stock they will need. They can do research on the internet to find out the prices of rental properties and the supplies they will need. They can do decimal calculations by hand or with a calculator. This will include adding decimals and multiplying decimals. Extension: Students who finish early can create an advertisement to attract customers to their new store. You could even have a day where each student presents their unique store idea to the class. Standards: CCSS5.NBT.B.7 Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. CCSS7.NS.A.3 Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with rational numbers. If your science students have started or finished a space unit , I have just the game they’ll love. This is a Race to Space Board Game that can be implemented at any time. It is great for an introduction or a review. This is great for upper elementary students in 4th and 5th grade. Game Play Directions: --The goal of the game is to reach Saturn. --The first player rolls the die and moves however many spaces indicated on the die. --If you land on the nova card space, pick a card and answer the question. --The keeper of the answers will check the accuracy of the answer. --If the question is answered incorrectly, they will have to move back 2 spaces. --If they answer correctly, they get to stay where they are. --The first to Saturn wins! Teacher Instructions: --Cut out and laminate the game board and adventure/nova cards --Label the nova and adventure cards or print them on different color paper --Blank nova cards are provided if you want to write your own questions --You will need one die and game pieces for each player --You may want to assign one student to be the “keeper of the answers” or you can check the student’s answers yourself. --This game works best when played with 3-6 players. Included in this lesson is a 9 day unit plan, instructions for all the experiments and activities, and packet for a crime scene investigation. Sally Scarecrow has suffered a deadly hiccup attack at the hands of a teacher in the building. Student detectives spent the first day in detective school brushing up on content vocabulary, reviewing our suspect list, making predictions and observing the crime scene from a far. Over the next several days you will ask questions, compose experiments testing the cola from the crime scene for poison with litmus juice, dusting for finger prints, analyzing handwriting and more. We concluded our CSI by drafting a composite sketch of who we thought the culprit was, serving the culprit with an arrest warrant and reading her/him their Miranda Rights. Students will love solving the mystery of Sally Scarecrow! This is a great back to school or end of the year activity . There is not a better or more applicable way to teach students about the Scientific Method. The report portion of the packet can be used as the assessment component of the unit and includes a rubric. It covers everything!
