Middle School Math Stations or Centers: Large and Small Place Value
Math, Decimals, Place Value, Grade 5, 6, 7, Centers, Activities
This ready-to-print set of 5 stations or math centres will supplement a middle school geometry unit about place value: including numbers from the hundred millions to the millionths. I have included lots of real-life examples such as populations of countries around the world and actual Olympic luge results that are measured to the thousandth of a second. Math stations are an excellent way to get students engaged as they move about the room and work cooperatively with their peers. Even when students are in intermediate grades, they benefit from a variety of teaching strategies including the use of stations to make math class more interactive. Station 1: Students can work collaboratively to solve four word problems about place value. (optional: set out white boards for students to use) Station 2: Students explore decimal place value to the millionths with a random number generating dice game. (supplies needed: 2-sided counter or coin AND a 10-sided die to generate numbers) Station 3: Students explore the populations of countries to practice place value skills such as rounding, expanded form, and comparing large numbers. (supplies needed: access to the internet to find the populations) Station 4: Students compare real times (measured to the thousandths) from the men’s luge at the 2018 Winter Olympics. They identify and compare different decimal place values. Station 5: Students explain their mathematical thinking in words and pictures to answer a math journal prompt. (supplies needed: tablets or computers for online game extension) ***Answer Key Included*** Grades to Use With: These stations are designed for middle grades students (grades 5-7) or high school special education classrooms. If you enjoy these math stations, check out the others in my store for your middle school math class: Factors and Multiples Percent, Decimals. Following the skit, the spotlight shifts to understanding the essence of money and its significance. With hands-on demonstrations, students get a chance to actively participate, ensuring they remain engrossed and involved throughout the session. What is included? -The Goat Farmer and Chicken Farmer skit (props not included :-) -a power point that will define money and the challenges of a barter economy -a Federal Reserve bank publication titled: "MONEY", this is a must have resource when teaching about money! I use this resource in my 7th grade classroom, but it could be used in almost any middle or high school class. This has been a successful lesson in my economics class for almost 20 years. Chernobyl: Interactive Website Activity
Social Studies, History, History: World, Grade 7, 8, 9, 10, Activities
Chernobyl was a nuclear power plant in Ukraine, which had a terrible accident in 1986. An explosion and a fire happened in the reactor, which released a lot of radioactive material into the air. Radiation is a type of energy that can be harmful to humans and animals if they are exposed to too much of it. The radioactive material from the Chernobyl accident spread over a large area, and many people and animals were exposed to it. The radiation made some people very sick, and some even died from radiation poisoning. Many people had to leave their homes and never go back because the area was too dangerous to live in. After the accident, many countries worked together to try to clean up the area and make it safe again. They built a big structure called the "sarcophagus" around the damaged reactor to contain the radioactive material. People still work to make the area safer today. The Chernobyl accident was a tragedy, but it also taught us a lot about the importance of nuclear safety and the dangers of radiation. We continue to learn from it and work to prevent similar accidents from happening in the future. In this activity, students use the worksheet to explore the History Channel's Chernobyl website to find the answers to the worksheet . Students can work in pairs or individually to complete the task. This product comes with a complete teacher key. Ready to use - no prep!
