Bingo Game - Add and Subtact Fractions Including Mixed Numbers
Math, Fractions, Grade 5, Activities, Games
Two Bingo Games for your students to have fun practicing adding and subtracting fractions including mixed numbers. Instructions include: Have students to make a 4 x 4 game board. They will fill in the answers in random order. This way everyone has a different board but all of the answers. Put up the first 2 questions. When all students finish #1, you can change to the second page, which still has #2 but also #3 for those that have also finished #2. This allows some students to work ahead when ready. When everyone has finished #2, move to the next screen, which has #3 and #4 as some students will be ready for #4. Continue in this way. Students can use a highlighter to mark their answers. Use a different color for each game. (Don’t have them completely mark out their answers with pen or pencil in the first game because they will use this same board in the second game.) Students MUST show their work on paper to get credit for a BINGO. For the problems that don’t have work to show, they must explain their answer on paper. The first game uses questions #1-8. In a regular size class there should be 5-6 bingos after this many questions. You can start the second game #9-16 or save that for another class time. Just make sure students save their board because both games use the same board. This skill corresponds to the 5th Grade Math Common Core Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.A.1 Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.) This 20 slide PowerPoint contains two bingo games of 8 questions each. Students will randomly fill in their own bingo boards with the given answers. All students will have every answer but in a different order on their bingo card. This way if a student works a problem and the answer is not on their card they know they have made an error. They will use the same card for both games so they must mark answers differently for each game. Detailed instructions are given in the file. The answer key is on the final slide of the PowerPoint. I usually give candy for bingos. Bingo has always been one of the best ways I have found for student engagement.

Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers Dice Game
Math, Fractions, Grade 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, Activities, Games
This is a fun and easy game to add to your fractions unit to help students practice working with mixed numbers and improper fractions. Students must demonstrate knowledge of what makes an improper fraction, how to convert an improper fraction into a mixed number, and how to order and compare mixed numbers. I suggest using 10-sided dice (if possible) for a wider variety of outcomes. I encourage my students to use mini-whiteboards for recording their work and doing their calculations. Student Instructions: 1) You and your partner each roll the die two times so you each have two numbers. 2) Use your two numbers to make an IMPROPER FRACTION (which one should be the numerator?). 3) Write down your improper fraction and convert it to a mixed number. 4) Compare with your partner’s mixed number. Which number is bigger? You might have to find a common denominator if the whole numbers are the same. 5) The person with the larger number gets a point. Play until one person has five points. Grades to Use With: This is a simple game that can be an addition to a lesson or fraction review in grades 3-7 when students are working with fractions that have a value greater than one. Standards: CCSS3NF.A.3 Compare fractions by creating equivalent fractions CCSS4NF.A.2 Compare fractions by creating equivalent fractions- finding common denominators CCSS4NF.B.4a Fractions greater than 1 and multiplying fractions What's Included: A simple 2 Page PDF. One instruction page for teachers and one half-page instruction sheet for students (cut one page in half and give to two groups). Preparation The teacher prepares for this activity by printing and laminating bingo boards for each student. To make the exercise more interactive, teachers can use manipulatives like buttons or counters. Alternatively, dry erase markers could be used on laminated boards to mark off blocks. Versatility This bingo game offers versatility in adoption across various learning instances like whole class instruction or small group work. It considers factors such as classroom size and different proficiency levels with respect to fraction knowledge among students. Aesthetic Appeal & Variety The set comes in both colourful and black-and-white designs which cater to practical considerations like cost-effectiveness in printing whilst maintaining visual appeal. With five different boards included there's plenty variety for multiple gaming sessions which helps reduce any monotony traditionally associated with fraction learning. Add-On Features An unpredictable Nature: An individual set of calling cards included ensures that every new play-through is unique. Strategic Thinking: Not all blocks in the game have a unique fraction representation which provides an opportunity for students to strategize about which block to cover, enabling multiple rounds of gameplay without reaching an abrupt end. In essence, this resource is not simply a game , but a compelling teaching tool. Its goal is to make math more accessible and enjoyable—setting students up for success in tackling fractions effectively and with fun along the way.
