Mental Math Games: Number Sense Subitizing Flash Cards 5 Ways!

Mental Math Games: Number Sense Subitizing Flash Cards 5 Ways!
Math, Early Math, Counting, Numbers, Multiplication and Division, Multiplication, Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2, 3, Centers, Activities, Games

This unique set of 40 subitizing flashcards encourages your students to practice a vital mental math skill: subitizing, which is instantly recognizing how many there are in small groups of items and then using that knowledge for counting larger numbers! It’s a fun way to also practice early multiplication skills and learn math facts- by mentally counting equal groups in a visual display. Finally, it's an easy and simple routine to foster students' number sense. It makes a great math centre to use all year long in multiple ways! There are two unique cards for each number value from 1-20: 40 cards in all! Ways to Use: 1) Traditional Flashcards: Hold up a flashcard and ask your student to let you know how many items there are using their mental counting skills. 2) Memory Game: Spread mixed-up pairs of cards facedown on the table (you could use from 5-20 pairs, based on your students’ ages and abilities). Students will take turns, flip two cards over, and look for pairs of cards that have the same value. They continue playing as you would a standard memory matching game. 3) Line Them Up: Have your students work individually or in pairs to line up one set of cards with values from 1-20. 4) One More, One Less: One student shows a single card. Their partner can search through the rest of the cards to find one that is worth one more and a card that is worth one less. 5) Explain Your Counting: Have your students use the included worksheet to explain how they mentally count the items on one of the cards. For example, "I see 4 groups of 4 and one more." What's Included: 12 Page PDF- Ready to Print and Use! Teacher Instructions (for five different games and activities) Student Worksheet for "Explain Your Counting" 10 Pages of Flashcards

Square Root and Cube Root Mental Math Matching Game Estimating 8th 9th

Square Root and Cube Root Mental Math Matching Game Estimating 8th 9th
Math, Algebra, Number Lines, Multiplication and Division, Grade 8, 9, Activities, Games, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

Here's a fun and hands-on way for your students to practice estimating square roots & cube roots using logical mental math strategies and known benchmarks. It's a simple matching game for students in 8th & 9th grade when they are learning about square roots & cube roots in math class. How to Use: Print a worksheet for each of your students along with a set of 24 matching cards for each group of two to four students. First, students need to complete their Square and Cube Roots Cheat Sheet. Give them time in class to do this in pairs or small groups. They should hold on to this sheet for the whole unit as it will be a useful resource. Let them practice estimating square and cube roots with the five practice questions. Go over mental math strategies as a class (use the answer key for ideas). When it’s time for the game, give groups of students one set of 24 cards. They need to shuffle the cards and match them up. They could do this several ways: Play as a memory matching game : spread cards facedown, flip 2 cards, see if they match, flip them back if they don’t. Play like Go Fish - ask the other players for certain cards. Or just spread all the cards out face-up, match up a pair, and explain why it’s a match . Grades to Use With: This game is designed to target 8th grade math learning outcomes about square roots, cube roots, mental math, and estimation. It could be used in 9th grade as a review activity. It could be used in high school special education classes where appropriate. What's Included: 6-Page PDF Ready to Print and Use! Teacher Instructions Square Root and Cube Root Cheat Sheet Answer Key for Square Root and Cube Root Cheat Sheet 3 pages (24 cards) for the Matching Game

Math Doubles Plus One Fact Activities

Math Doubles Plus One Fact Activities
Math, Numbers, Grade 1, 2, Activities, Games

Math Doubles Plus One Fact Activities Fun is differentiatedand has3 different math levelsfor your use. This isbest as a partner game but can be used with a small group. Each child will need theirown card and tokens to cover their answers; such as, pennies, teddies, cubes of whatever you have around the room. If youlaminate the cards, which is suggested, you can have the children use wipe off markers and crayons to X their answer. Run off enough cards for the number of students playing the game and laminate. Each partnership or group needs one die. Directions for Use: ♥ The first card has only numbers or sums, which is the easiest level. Since the student just has to add the numbers together and cover the sum. ♥ The student will roll the die, double the number, add 1 and then cover the answer. For example. The child rolls a 6 (You may provide a manipulative, such as a number line or grid to support learners). ♥ The second card has the number model. ♥ With this activity the students roll the die and cover the equation or number model that shows a doubles plus one fact. For exampleif the student rolls a 3, then they would cover the number model 3+4 or 4+3. This requires a bit more higher order thinking. ♥ The third card has harder number models and would need to be used with a polyhedral dice that goes up to 12. ♥ The fourth card is blank so you can differentiate however you choose. You may even want the children to write the facts or sums that might go with different dice. For exampleif you are using a polyhedral die that goes up to 12, then the sums could go up to 25. It is yours to create whatever works for your class. It can even be a wipe off if laminated. ♥ The last worksheet is to check the student’s metacognitive thinking which is so important with state tests. Having children explain their thinking helps the teacher see how the student’s mind works. It is almost like a video camera and you can see where the breakdowns are or just how they are thinking and support as needed. Some children may need to do this verbally. ♥ I have also asked for the Name, date and time on the bottom of this sheet. I have experienced that many children have difficulty reading an analogue clock so this provides ongoing practice with writing a telling time from an analogue clock. Please note: The cards are the same because the dice determines the outcome. You will need to run off enough copies of each for your students.Check out some other math products you might like:
