PEE Paragraphs: Point, Evidence, Explanation with Sample Paragraphs

This lesson teaches students an organized and thorough approach to writing 5 sentence paragraphs. It is designed for middle school students in grades 5-8 or high school special education students. It introduces the terms: Point (stated in the topic sentence & the concluding sentence): says what the paragraph is about by making a claim or sharing an opinion Evidence: a fact, statistic, example, or quotation from a text that supports your point Explanation: your explanation and analysis of why the evidence supports your point Then it teaches students how to use these kinds of sentences to create a cohesive paragraph. Colour-coding is used to make the information more visual, but the pages can also be printed in black and white. What's Included: 10 Page PDF ready to print and go! Title Page/Teacher Instructions Student Handout with all of the necessary terminology: Students can refer back to this again and again! Seven engaging activities are included: Two cut-and-paste sample paragraph activities: These activities have 5 sentences which are mixed up. Students cut them out and paste them in the correct order to create logical paragraphs. One is about Little Red Riding Hood and one is about Mi'kmaq culture. Three paragraphs that have errors that need fixing: These paragraphs don't have five sentences in the correct order, or the correct types of sentences. Students may have to cross out a sentence and/or add a sentence. There is room to re-write the entire paragraph correctly. Social stories use a patient and reassuring tone to teach children about social situations in a way that can be easily understood. Social stories are particularly useful for children on the autistic spectrum for whom social cues can be challenging and who often suffer anxiety if they do not know what to expect from a situation however social stories can also be useful for any child who is struggling to understand a situation or concept or needs help to understand a social skill or social cue, expectations, perspectives, common responses or is troubled about an upcoming event. This social story is to support children who have been biting others. It explains that biting others hurts them and is unacceptable. "The Declaration of Independence" - A Play and Activity

Are you teaching about the Declaration of Independence in your classroom? Here is an activity to help bring it alive to your students. This play will take about 20-25 minutes depending on how you present or use it in your classroom. It is a great lesson enhancer! Students love to be moving around and engaged in class activities. This is perfect for that because all students may be involved if you choose! Have fun debriefing the play after you finish it with your students. They will have some good questions! I've also included a Declaration of Independence (DOI) activity . This activity "breaks down" the DOI - the five sections (The Preamble - Reasons for the Separation, the Rights of the People, the Tyrannical Acts of the King or List of Grievances, the Attempts at Reconciliation, and the declaration of being free and independent states!) The activity can take around 20-25 minutes, as well. Both of these activities will help you bring the Declaration of Independence alive in your classroom!
