Mankind Story of All of Us: Episode 8 (Treasure)
Social Studies, History, History: World, Grade 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
In 2010, History's 12-hour series `America the Story of Us' illustrated how technology advanced human progress throughout American history. This follow-up series takes it a step further by expanding beyond America and taking a look at how technology has evolved throughout the world. The series covers key events that were turning points in the human journey in transitioning from being hunter-gatherers to global citizens, including how people's lives in one part of the world are affected by events elsewhere. Among the topics covered are surviving the Ice Age, discovering farming techniques, the invention of movable type, creating the Industrial Revolution and exploring space. Actor Josh Brolin narrates. In the Andes, the Spanish open up the largest silver mine in the world and mint millions of pesos de ocho (pieces of eight). These coins transform the global economy. They fill the treasure chests of pirates. They fuel a stock market boom and help pay for the Taj Mahal. As trade booms, millions of people come to the New World as slaves. But a handful of Pilgrims come as pioneers looking for freedom. These teacher-generated questions are designed to help students focus in on key information during the video. Ready to print and use! Comes with a completed answer key! Thumbnail clipart credit: PrincePadania

Holiday Flavors: An ESL Lesson about Holiday Cheer and Seasonal Foods
ESL, Language Development, ELA, Vocabulary, Adult Education, Not Grade Specific, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans
Are you crazy for pumpkin spice? Is Thanksgiving incomplete without a turkey and stuffing? Does Christmas only feel real after the first sip of eggnog? In this ESL lesson your students will discuss holiday cheer, and how seasonal foods play a part in getting in the mood for the holidays. Students will be given the opportunity to discuss their guilty pleasures as to holiday foods and explain what exactly makes them enjoy the holidays. Does the weather outside need to be frightful and the fire inside delightful? Does Mariah Carey need to be belting from the stereo? Does Home Alone need to be playing on repeat to start the season? Does a trip to a heavily-decorated mall let you know that Santa is coming? Take the opportunity to celebrate the holidays with your students by talking about their holiday traditions. *****Our lessons focus on practical day to day language, while providing an array of vocabulary words that teach students how to speak with a native flair. The design of each lesson plan is to encourage open conversation with students. Our lessons typically follow the same format. Each topic or lesson plan will begin with a series of warm-up questions, followed by an initial introduction of ten vocabulary words, and a fill in the blank in exercise. The second half of the lesson will include an additional series of questions, five more vocabulary words and a post lesson writing assignment. All of this is designed to make the lesson extremely interactive and encourage students to converse freely, while providing vocabulary focused tasks and an engaging topic. Each lesson will have an article or video referenced that will introduce the main theme or topic of the lesson. Please be advised that some of these articles have a paywall or limited monthly access. However, there is usually a work around. We hope these lessons plans will make your life easier and help build a deeper bond between you and your students. ********
