Writing Center Words & Write-the Room Activity – HALLOWEEN
ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, Centers, Activities
A favorite with my students! THIS is really when my most reluctant writers start to enjoy the Writing Center ! They cannot wait to get their turn to write scary stories or about Halloween fun! Help your students with their creative writing with these Halloween themed words and images for your K-2 classroom Writing Center . Words with images include: bat, black cat, candy, cauldron, Frankenstein, ghost, haunted house, jack-o-lantern, mummy, skeleton, spider web, trick-or-treat, witch, werewolf, vampire, and zombie. My students really love working in the Writing Center ! I have plenty of tools and “help” available to them, and these fun Halloween themed word pages which they can't wait to get their hands on. I print two copies, so there is no arguing about having to share, and I laminate them for durability before placing in the Writing Center . Students can easily grab a laminated word page and use it to help write their stories. Page 4 of the PDF is for the Writing Center . Print and laminate one or two and place it in the Writing Center for your students to access as needed. Also included are 16 cards for a Write–the–Room activity if you choose to use them. (I have only used this with my Kindergarten class.) These cards are four-per-page, with the same words and images used for the Writing Center . Pages 5-8 of the PDF are cards for use as a Write-the-Room activity. You may wish to laminate for durability to be able to use year-after-year, and use sticky tack (poster putty) to mount it to walls, bookshelves, file cabinets, etc. I find this is easier than tape. On of my grade-level teachers prints in gray scale, tapes them up, and then lets students take them home after use. Whatever works best for you. Recording pages for the Write-the-Room are included on pages 9 and 10. Page 9 is a full-size recording sheet, and page 10 has 2 half-size recording sheets if you use mini-clip boards like I do. Please note - the first three pages are for "packaging" purposes.

"Crusades and Black Death": Regents Global 9 CRQ + Video Lessons
Social Studies, History, History: World, Grade 9, 10, Teacher Tools, Assessments
Regents Global 9 CRQ "Crusades and Black Death" + Video Lessons This product is a constructed-response question (“CRQ”) in the format of the new New York State Regents examination in Global History and Geography. The CRQ calls upon the student to examine historical sources (I use exclusively primary sources) by providing historical or geographic context, identifying the point of view, intended audience, or purpose of a document and then using the two documents in either compare-contrast, cause-effect analysis, or turning point identification. I advocate a strategy of assigning one CRQ in each unit of study in grades nine and ten without access to notes. I used this as one of the tests at the end of a unit of study. I would tell students about what kinds of documents would appear and what historical context they should be able to recall in advance. It is a challenging task for them. The first challenge for novices is to understand what it means to provide context. Faced with the question “What is the historical context of this document?”, beginners will retell what the document says. The reason for this mistake is that, since they were little kids, teachers have asked them to relate what a text means to prove they understood it. [ Read more at the Innovation blog ] Product includes: 1. Student version 2. Teacher version with suggested answers 3. Passcode to video lessons students can use to prepare the task.
