Digital Portraits Lesson
Creative Arts, Art, Graphic Arts, Grade 6, 7, 8, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans
This is a Digital Portraits Lesson for your middle school art students. This presentation will begin with 3 questions for students to ponder, discuss and answer: What do you know about digital art? How is it created? What is a vector image? How is that different from a Raster (Bitmap) image? Students will get a chance to learn about each of these art forms in further detail through descriptions, explanations, and visual examples (with credit to the artists that created them). With each artwork example slide, you can allow students to form groups and discuss what they see and how techniques were applied to these digital portraits. This is also a great opportunity for whole group discussion. Student’s assignment will be: “You will be creating a digital vector portrait of yourself. If digital art is entirely brand new to you, you will watch this tutorial (you have permission to speed it up) and create your own digital portrait using Google Drawing. If you are experienced with digital art, I challenge you to use Google Drawing (an incredibly simple platform in comparison to what you probably use) to create your vector portrait. Take a look at the tutorial above to get some ideas for strategies. However, if you choose to use your own digital platform to create your portrait, it must still be in the “vector art” style, and must have some additional creative elements like the few portrait examples towards the end in the previous slides. Once you’re finished, submit your work as a Google Drawing file/link in the Google Classroom and complete the attached reflection. Additionally, save the image from the app, and set it as your Profile Picture on Google.” A scoring rubric is included.

Geometry Project: Park Design- Area, Perimeter, Volume, and Budgeting
Math, Decimals, Multiplication and Division, Division, Money, Geometry, Measurements, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Activities, Projects
This math project allows students in 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th grade to apply their knowledge of perimeter, area, volume, financial literacy, and decimal calculations to a realistic & creative situation: planning a fun new park! They will design a new park that includes different areas for swimming, playing, eating, resting, walking, and even skating! Students will use their knowledge of perimeter of right-angled shapes when planning the size and shape of the park & the amount of fencing required use their knowledge of area when splitting the park up into different sections for activities use their knowledge of volume when considering filling the pool in their park use their knowledge of money math/decimal calculations when determining the grand total price of the entire park project. Each section has a different cost- a great introduction to unit rate. For example, paths are much less expensive than a playground, while grassy areas cost less than the swimming pool does. I ask my students to calculate by hand, but you can allow yours to use a calculator as well. This project gets students using their creative and logical problem solving skills, organizational skills, careful calculating methods, and neat drawing and colouring. It is a great project to use for a summative assessment at the end of a unit or to show parents at parent-teacher conferences. What's Included: A total of 4 pages in PDF format: Ready to print and use! Title Page, 2 Page Worksheet, 1 Page Grid Grades to Use With: This math project could work in grades 4-8 in regular math classes. It could also be used in high school special education classes. Class/Group Activity - Write Inequalities from Conceptual Problems
Algebra, Grade 7, Activities
This is a group/class activity for students to practice writing multi-step in inequalities. There are 4 problems with 5 possible answers each. More than one inequality may be correct. Students will discuss their choices and then must be ready to defend their answers. This activity corresponds to the Common Core math standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.EE.B.4.B Solve word problems leading to inequalities of the form px + q > r or px + q < r, where p, q, and r are specific rational numbers. Graph the solution set of the inequality and interpret it in the context of the problem. Teacher Directions Before Lesson: Divide students into 6 groups. Assign each group a letter A – F. Cut apart inequalities. Make a “yes” box and a “no” box. If you don’t have a document camera, then copy the questions to a Power Point to display to class. (or copy to overhead sheet to display) Lesson: Have students move their desks to groups so they are able to discuss and hear everyone in their group. Give each group their corresponding inequality for #1 while placing question #1 where the class can read. Each group will decide if their inequality is correct or not and then place the inequality in the correct yes or no box. When everyone is ready, go over each inequality by having each group explain their decision. Continue in the same way for the remaining questions. You might want to make it a game and keep score.
