Phonic Reading Scheme for Older Students: AY: Books 34 + 35

Two AY Phonic reading books with 2 matching PowerPoints and 27 worksheets to support learning. This book is part of an incremental phonics reading scheme with a difference. Introducing just 10 words in each phonics family, the words are repeated from book to book, giving even those with very poor word recall the chance to learn to read fluently without having to decode every word. Ideal for dyslexics, or those suspected of being dyslexic and all children with a special need. These are not typical decodables where a single sound is 'stuffed' into a short text. While this can be useful for initial practice, it often results in unnatural language and does not reflect how real reading works. In contrast, this programme is cumulative : nothing new is added unless it has been taught, and nothing previously taught is removed. This mirrors how skilled reading develops. The books cover these sounds and must be taught in this order: CK; OO; SH; CH; ND/NT; NK; TH; NG; AR; A_E, I_E, O_E, U_E, AI, EA, OA, IGH, IR. AY, Rationale: It has long been proven that teaching children to decode is a powerful tool for teaching reading, as opposed to the Look and Say method. However, this has led to a proliferation of reading books that throw as many words with a shared phonics sound into a book as possible, not realising that some children with very poor word recall find it hard to recognise words when they see them again without much repetition. To combat this problem, while we recognise that, technically, once a child has been taught a new sound s/he can sound out many words with that new sound, when it comes to reading fluently, a child needs a core set of words in each family that they can recognise, which can act as a launch pad as they gain confidence. These books have been designed accordingly. For each sound family, just 10 words are studied with the help of the workbooks and are then repeated throughout the books, each book building on the vocabulary that has already been learned, repeating it and including it in new phrases as new sounds are learned. As the programme progresses, new sounds from the learned families are incorporated to widen vocabulary, while taking care to maintain fluency. The books are designed to limit guessing (though most children will try and guess, which must be avoided at all costs). Summary: These books are based on: Cumulative progression – skills are built and are never assumed Controlled text – no untaught sounds appear Meaningful reading – children read for sense, not just accuracy Reduced guessing – decoding is supported, not replaced by context Pluses of this phonics reading programme Easy to print Cheap to buy compared with expensive reading schemes They are just as effective as the best reading programmes out there, and more importantly, they have been tried and tested on real children with severe difficulties and proven to work if the child is taught as outlined. Aligned with the aims and objectives of LETRS and the Science of Reading. They work! My pupils tell me if they don't work, so I re-edit them and try them before I put them out for the general public. Introduces most high-frequency words in the phonics family to which they belong, and gradually introduces genuine, non-decodable sight words into the text without causing overload or throwing the child off course. BL Beginning Blends Worksheets

This BL fun, Find and Color worksheet for initial blends is excellent for acquainting children orally with initial consonant blends and helping them develop the necessary phonemic awareness in preparation for more advanced blending work, involving four phonemes. What is included in the pack? One PDF sheet for the BL blend. This is a sample of our pack of 20 activities covering common initial blends which can be found here in one PDF file: less clutter on your computer! What do the worksheets involve? Pupils are instructed to combine the two letters on the worksheet and then look for objects that start with that consonant blend. Then, these items ought to be coloured, leaving the others uncoloured. Children can easily work on the sheet unaided once they have been instructed, although, with those children with special needs, it is strongly suggested that an adult works with the child for maximum benefit. How to use The introduction of the concept of initial blends needs to be done thoroughly. When I work with children, especially those with a special need, I first like to teach children to blend two consonant letters. Then I work on developing the children's phonemic awareness: that being the ability to hear two consonant letters blended at the beginning of a word, easily. This is difficult for some pupils and takes a lot of practice. These worksheets can assist by first encouraging students to blend the two consonant letters and then by helping them to hear the blend at the start of a word. As often as you can, practice blending the letters in each initial blend and encourage the students to follow suit. I find that modelling is key at this stage. Who are the initial blends Find and colour worksheets for? Young learners Those with a special need Due to their non-babyish nature , they can be successfully used with older ESL/EFL pupils. Here is a handy Doubling Rule A4-size poster. Do you need a simple way to help pupils know when to double and when not? Doubling can be made complicated, with more rules added, all of which add extra steps for a child to remember. This makes spelling a nightmare for a child with a processing difficulty. Whereas textbooks can become outdated in no time, any changes to technology or the world will result in updates to this product. Mixed Questions The mixed questions section of each lesson includes a variation of five comprehension, vocabulary and math questions. In addition, key reading strategies are frequently covered including cause & effect, summarizing, compare & contrast and making conclusions. Two or three of the questions will be MCQs and other questions will require a written response of some kind. Full answers and example responses appear at the end of the lesson. Spelling & Vocab Each reading passage contains a variety of words and phrases designed for Grade 4-5 students. Spelling and vocab activities provide the opportunity to build fluency with these words. As it can become quite mundane doing the same activities over and over, each lesson in a set will contain a different spelling and vocab activity . Activities include: spelling games, sentence match-ups, mixed-up text and decoding words from the lesson. Writing Prompts Writing prompts are designed to continue the theme or lessons learned in the story. Students are persuaded to write in a variety of ways and each prompt includes several cues to help. As with the spelling/vocab section, writing prompts will vary. This includes research pieces, reading responses, poetry and creative writing prompts. Full Answer Keys Full answer keys and sample responses are provided so no matter how busy you are, you know you're covered! Mixed question answers provide evidence from the text, math questions contain the relevant workings. Answers are designed for use by the teacher, but also suitable as a handout to the student. Reading Intervention for Struggling Readers: Book 8:

This Reading Intervention for Struggling Readers: Book 8 provides an easy-read story with four chapters, helping the pupil to begin to carry meaning from page to page and chapter to chapter. Review questions help the teacher check for comprehension. This book is the eighth in a series of books written to provide intervention for struggling readers using decodable reading books, written to build confidence and help the child attain fluency and comprehension. This book is useful for reading intervention for older pupils, maybe even 11+ who are struggling to read fluently, but who have a smattering of phonic knowledge but with gaps. It builds on the vocabulary of the books that have gone before. giving the child a familiar base on which to build. The large, clear font and short paragraphs help those with visual tracking difficulties. It follows: Book 1 CVC Words Book 2 Consonant Blends Words Book 3 More Consonant Blends Words Book 4 CK word Book 5 OO Words Book 6 Revise CK and OO with added extra basic vocabulary Book 7 Split digraphs, AI, EA and OA Who is this book for? Older pupils who can read but who have a reading age well below their chronological age and struggle to read simple text accurately and fluently, thereby lacking comprehension. It is not for pupils who are just beginning to read with phonics. Please see my Graded reading books for such pupils. It is convenient enough for parents to use with their children and for use by teachers and private tutors. Outline and steps Having secured a child's blending skills with three and four sounds in books 1 to 3, and practised CK and OO words, we now start to extend the child's ability to decode new words with either one, two or three syllables. Assess the whole time as the child reads: if the child stumbles on a word, make a note to revise that phonic sound before continuing to the next book. I find that often these children need help distinguishing between similar words, such as back and black, and by retraining the child to read accurately using these simple texts - that do not look babyish - and then rebuilding from the bottom up, much progress can be made. I thought that my pupils would look with disdain at these books. I found the opposite; they were so relieved that at last somebody had actually given them a book they could read! Simply print on A4 paper, two on a page. Cut into individual A5 pages, and staple or bind them together to make a book. Purpose These books have been written and tried and tested on some of my older pupils (mainly boys I admit), and they have proved very helpful. Most of my pupils have a dyslexic type problem, involving poor processing skills and have had years of failure. They must build a secure foundation for reading ability to build upon. These books, used as described, will help to build that foundation. I am finding an increasing number of such pupils desperate for help. You can help, too!
